IF IT'S AEROBICS YOU WANT, WE SURE HAVE CHOICES

Four out of five doctors recommend aerobic exercise for their patients who do exercise.

OK, so I made that statistic up. But it is true that aerobic exercise is a a great way to get in shape and stay in shape.

Recreation departments and other organizations throughout the New RIver Valley recognize this and offer a variety of aerobics classes:

Blacksburg has continuous low-impact/high-intensity classes. Hour-long evening classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $12 for eight classes. A one-time trial pass is $1. For information, call the recreation center, 961-1135.

Radford has a wide variety of continuously held aerobics classes. Three classes are held at the recreation department. The cost for these is $10 per month and preregistration at the department is required. The low-impact morning class is Monday-Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the recreation department. The evening stretch-and-tone/low-impact class is Tuesday-Thursday at 5:15 p.m. And step class is Monday-Thursday at 7 p.m. A fourth class is offered at Genesis Aerobic & Martial Arts at Third and Wadsworth streets. The step class is Monday-Thursday at 6 p.m. The cost is $15 per month. Participants need to register at class. For information, call the recreation department, 731-3633.

Registration for the next session of low-impact aerobics and slimnastics starts May 1 in Christiansburg. The six-week aerobics course starts June 27. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory. The cost is $15 for town residents and $25 for nonresidents. The eight-week slimnastics course starts June 5. Classes are Monday and Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at the Armory. The cost is $20 for town residents and $30 for nonresidents. For information, call the recreation department, 382-2349.

Montgomery County offers low-impact aerobics and stretch-and-tone classes periodically. Classes are generally twice a week and held in the evenings at Christiansburg Primary School. Cost is $24 for each two-month session. For information, call the recreation department, 382-6980.

The local YMCAs also are a great place for exercise. The Open University at the Virginia Tech YMCA (231-4208) offers fitness, high-intensity and step classes, as well as a stretching-and-toning class. The Hensel Eckman YMCA in Pulaski (980-3671) offers a variety of aerobics classes.

Aerobics classes are also offered at many of the health and fitness clubs and by employee and apartment organizations.

Check with the club or organization for specific information. Many of these companies are listed in the Yellow Pages under ``Health and Exercise'' and ``Fitness Clubs.''

ARE YOU HEALTHY? The Health-O-Lympics '95 asks that question. The competition is designed to allow teams of employees from different companies to show who is healthiest in a series of serious and not-so-serious events.

The competition is April 29 in Blacksburg. Check-in is 12-12:45 p.m. at the old Lyric Theatre on College Avenue. The parade and opening walk in which all participants will take part is at 12:45. The games start at 1 on and around the Virginia Tech Mall.

Teams may be made up of four to 15 people from a company. Each squad must have at least one female participant in the relays and other events. Entry fee is $50.

Events include the Executive Strut, a fast-walk relay of four 220-yard legs with team members exchanging briefcases; the Mixed Relay, a real 440-yard relay with four-person teams; the Big Shot, a crutch-hurling competition; and the Super Executive Obstacle Course, a traditional drill course including tire hoops, low hurdles, cones, nets, etc.

ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: The Pulaski Razorbacks fared even better this season than the Arkansas team they're named after.

The Pulaski version went unbeaten and claimed the regular season title in the Junior Boys Basketball League.

In the regular season finale, a battle of the league's two top teams, the 8-0 Razorbacks pulled away in the second half to beat the 7-1 Gophers, 62-44.

DORIAN HENDRICKS with 26 points and J.R. BROWN with 24 led the Razorbacks, and ADAM VIET poured in a dozen points in the second half.

The Gophers' ROBERT ROGERS scored a game-high 30.

Elsewhere around the league, the Thunder (6-2) became the first team ever to hit the century mark as it topped the Magic, 100-32. Seven Thunder players scored in double figures, paced by RYAN NUNLEY with 24 and COREY NEWMAN with 22.
