The Twin County Ruritan Club has elected new officers.
They are: Talmadge Mathis, president; Lynn Ricker, vice president; Frances Helmandollar, secretary; and Trudy Graham, treasurer.
Newly appointed officers are: Carole Brackman, reporter, and Curt Helmandollar, chaplain. Directors are: Edith Parker, Janie Mathis and Vera Peterson.
Lynn Ricker was also selected Ruritan member of the year.
The Twin County Ruritan Club serves the U.S. 11/Virginia 460 corridor from Salem to Shawsville.
Salvation Army camp extended one week
The Salvation Army Christian Summer Day Camp has been extended one week.
The camp, for 6- to 12-year-olds, is from 8 am. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Salvation Army Community Center on Dale Avenue. It lasts from June 19 to Aug. 18.
The $20 registration fee includes two day camp T-shirts. The weekly rate is $45 per child, and $35 for each additional child if more than three in a family.
Parents or guardians must provide transportation to and from camp and a bag lunch each day. Cold drinks will be provided.
All fees must be paid by cash or money order the Friday before the session begins.
Registration runs through May 31 at the center. Space is limited to 50 children.

Several honored by ARC Roanoke
The Association for Retarded Citizens, Roanoke Inc. recently presented the following awards:
Board members recognized for completing their terms were Judy Griesenbrock, Norm Gervais, June Long, Carol Carroll and Jon Iott.
Outstanding client achievement award winners were Clifford Robinson, Michael Hutchens, Mike Young and Robert McKinney.
Sears Roebuck and Co. received the Supported Employer of the Year award, and Jimmy Shaw received the Advocacy award. Past presidents Ed Garner and Norm Gervais were also recognized.
The organization honored the late Ray Robrecht as a Distinguished Citizen.
Museum, zoo offer kids summer camp
The Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Mill Mountain Zoo are teaming up to offer a one week summer camp for children ages 8 to 10.
Participants in "The Essential Elements" will spend days visiting both the zoo and the museum. Children will discuss the basic elements of the Earth: air, fire, water and how biodiversity is affected by earthly interactions.
The program will be held July 31 to Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Registration fee is $85, although membership to either organization may provide a discount. For more information, either call the zoo at 343-3221 or the museum at 342-5727.
Event raises money for MDA
A Vinton man won top fund-raising honors in the 1995 Vinton "Lock-Up" to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
David Allen, of Black Sheep Auto Service, raised $720. Mitchell Bowman and his students at Herman L. Horn Elementary school came in second, raising $664. The third-place fund-raiser was Frances Houghtaling of Fran's Auto, who raised $633.
The event, which was held at the Vinton War Memorial, raised $9,306 for the MDA patient service program.
