ROANOKE JAYCEES HONOR 6 FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS

Six Roanoke Valley residents recently received awards during the Roanoke Jaycees' 49th annual Distinguished Service Awards Banquet. Honorees were nominated by others and were chosen for their commitment and leadership to both their professions and the community.

Lewis Peery was named Distinguished Citizen for his contributions to Total Action Against Poverty, the United Way, the YMCA, the Blue Ridge Mountains Council, Boy Scouts of America, The Roanoke Valley Council of Community Services, the Virginia Cooperative Extension and Roanoke City Schools.

Susan W. Spangler received the Outstanding Young Woman award. An attorney and partner of Wooten & Hart, P.C., Spangler serves on the board of directors for TAP and donates time to the Junior League. She also is an active participant in the Fishburn Park Elementary School PTA and teaches Sunday school at First Presbyterian Church.

Victor Gravely was named Outstanding Young Man. In 1994, he was honored as a "Brother to Brother Role Model." A long-time member of the Roanoke Jaycees, Gravely is active in the West End Community Center and Liberty Adult Day Care Center.

During the last 12 years, Karen Pendleton, who was named Outstanding Young Educator, has worked for Roanoke County Schools in behavior adjustment, learning disabilities and Chapter 1. She is language arts coordinator at Clearbrook Elementary School and chairwoman for the Spelling Textbook Adoption Committee.

Sterling "Eddie" Hite was named Outstanding Young Rescue Squad Member. Hite, a Salem Fire Department platoon sergeant, has volunteered for the past 15 years with the Salem Rescue squad and is now captain. He also helps coordinate Camp D.A.R.E.

Randall Dean Cox, (not pictured) a Roanoke Police officer, received the Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer award. In 1994, he received two awards for exceptional performance and investigative talents as district officer.
