The Roanoke Valley Roller Hockey League will begin play in June. The adult amateur league, open to skaters age 16 and above, is being organized by Tim Woodburn, the Express' director of marketing and broadcasting.
The league will play Sunday nights from June 4 through August 6 at the Olympic Roller Skating Center on Washington Avenue in Vinton. Woodburn expects about 12 teams for a 10-game season.
Each team will have a nine-player roster, including one goalie, with skaters playing 4-on-4 ball roller hockey. Each game will consist of three 15-minute periods.
Woodburn already has commitments from six teams. Team registration is $400. Individuals may register for $45, and a tryout and practice is scheduled to form teams with the individuals registered.
Registration is scheduled May 28 at 6 p.m. at the Olympic skating center, with league play scheduled to start June 4.
The player and team fees will be used to pay for building rental and referees.
Woodburn said one team in the league will include Express general manager Pierre Paiement, club president John Gagnon, co-owner Joe Steffen and Woodburn.
Those interested in information or registration on the roller hockey league should call Woodburn at 989-1524.
