NAME STUDY SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD

The Blue Ridge Onomastic (name study) Symposium will be held Saturday at the Roanoke Public Library's main branch, Brody Room.

Local presenters include Peter Fosl of Hollins College, who will speak on ``The Virtues and Vices of Name Mixing''; Steve Urquhart, a Scot from Vinton, speaking on ``The Man Who Would Not Be King''; and free-lance writer Helen Barranger, who will speak on ``Roanoke and Roanoke - From the Carolina Coast to Texas.''

Leonard R.N. Ashley, of Brooklyn College, N.Y.,author of books and articles pertaining to names, will speak on ``The Onomastics of Commercial Names.'' Robert M. Rennick, author and Director of the Kentucky Place-name Survey, will speak on ``Some Kentucky Place-name Legends'' and Mdoine G. Schramm of South Carolina will speak on ``Nicknames and Mascots of Virginia Colleges.''

The American Name Society, sponsor of the event, studies the origins and meanings of words used as names or labels.

The symposium is open to the public.
