Bell Atlantic Corp. reported first-quarter net income of $414.5 million, or 95 cents per share, on revenue of $3.45 billion, compared with year-earlier $389.2 million, or 89 cents per share, on revenues of $3.42 billion.
BellSouth Corp.
BellSouth Corp., Atlanta-based parent of BellSouth Communication Systems of Roanoke, reported first-quarter net income of $547.1 million, or 69 cents per share, on operating revenues of $4.29 billion, compared with year-earlier $585.3 million, or 69 cents per share, on revenues of $4.12 billion.
Chesapeake Corp.
Chesapeake Corp. reported first-quarter net income of $20.8 million, or 87 cents per share, on sales of $291.1 million, compared with year-earlier $2 million, or 9 cents per share, on sales of $212 million. Richmond-based Chesapeake is parent of Chesapeake Packaging Co. in Roanoke
Cooper Industries
Cooper Industries Inc., Houston parent of Crouse-Hinds electrical products plant in Roanoke, reported first-quarter earnings of $55.3 million, or 48 cents per share, on revenues of $1.12 billion, compared with year-earlier $48.4 million, or 31 cents per share, on revenues of $1.04 billion.
CSX Corp.
CSX Corp. reported first-quarter net earnings of $121 million, or $1.15 per share, on revenues of $2.47 billion, compared with year-earlier $74 million, or 71 cents per share, on revenues of $2.22 billion. The Richmond transportation and real estate company has rail operations in Western Virginia.
Fieldcrest Cannon
Fieldcrest Cannon Inc. reported net income of $3.6 million, or 28 cents per share, on sales of $257 million, compared with year-earlier $5.5 million, or 47 cents per share, on sales of $232.3 million. The Eden, N.C.-based textile maker operates a towel mill in Henry County.
Noland Co.
Noland Co. reported first-quarter net income of $1.1 million, or 29 cents per share on sales of $111.7 million, compared with year-earlier $255,784, or 7 cents per share, on sales of $97.1 million. Newport News-based Noland operates building supplies wholesaling stores in Roanoke.
Ruddick Corp.
Ruddick Corp., Charlotte, N.C., parent of Harris Teeter supermarkets, reported net income of $10.3 million, or 45 cents per share, on sales of $510 million in its second quarter, ended April 2. That compares with year-earlier $7.4 million, or 32 cents per share, on sales of $466 million. For the six months, net income was $18.6 million, or 80 cents per share, on sales of $1.02 billion, compared with year-earlier $13.7 million, or 58 cents per share, on sales of $930 million.
Sears, Roebuck
Sears, Roebuck and Co. reported first-quarter earnings of $559 million, or $1.41 per share, on revenues of $13 billion, compared with a year-earlier net loss of $98 million, equal to 27 cents per share, on revenues of $12.3 billion.
Tultex Corp.
Tultex Corp., Martinsville fleecewear maker, reported a first-quarter loss of $11.7 million, equal to 40 cents per share, on sales of $84.1 million, compared with year-earlier net loss of $4.9 million, equal to 18 cents per share, on sales of $86.3 million. Of the most recent loss, the company said $4.9 million was from operations and $6.8 million was associated with refinancing of company debt and an accounting change for advertising costs. Tultex also cited a downturn in demand for licensed logo activewear but said it expects that business to revive with resumption of baseball and hockey games.
