RED CROSS: BLOOD SUPPLY IS PLENTIFUL - FOR NOW

Blood donors have overwhelmed collection centers in Western Virginia in the wake of Wednesday's bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City.

The American Red Cross, Appalachian Regional Blood Services, extended its hours for today and scheduled a Saturday opening, but still have more people offering to give blood than can be accommodated, officials said Thursday.

Also, collections of blood in Oklahoma have been sufficient to meet present needs, said Bob Lutjen, director of donor resources in Roanoke.

The Red Cross anticipates, however, that more blood will be needed when Oklahoma victims are scheduled for surgeries.

Lutjen asked that potential donors call the Red Cross at 985-3570 to schedule an appointment for a later date.

Persons who want to make donations of money can send them to Disaster Relief Fund, American Red Cross, 352 Church Ave., Roanoke 24016.
