DEMOCRATIC SENATOR FROM ARK. TO RETIRE

Three-term Sen. David Pryor of Arkansas has decided not to seek re-election next year, associates said Thursday. He will be the fifth incumbent Democratic senator to retire.

Pryor is one of President Clinton's closest confidants in the Senate.

Pryor, 60, suffered a heart attack in April 1991 and underwent heart bypass surgery in November 1992. He was scheduled to announce his decision at a reception with supporters this morning in Little Rock.
