Second baseman Chad Bagby went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double and scored four runs for the Hornets (22-6 overall, 12-2 conference). Chris Nason (3-0) pitched five innings of five-hit ball to pick up the win.

Washington and Lee (7-17, 4-10) was plagued by control problems as its six pitchers gave up a total of nine walks.

Duane Filchner smacked three home runs and had five RBI for Radford but Richmond edged the Highlanders 8-6 in a baseball game at Richmond to give head coach Ron Atkins his 300th career victory. Atkins is currently in his 11th season with the Spiders.

Richmond (31-11) tallied three unearned runs on one hit in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Filchner, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, hit a three-run homer in the seventh to pull the Highlanders to 6-5.

Radford (22-18) then had the tying run taken off the board on an appeal play at third base. Outfielder Bill Brennan doubled with two outs and catcher Jeff Collins singled to knock in Brennan. The Spiders appealed that Brennan missed third base and he was called out.

Bobby St. Pierre (8-2) picked up the win for Richmond. Mike Parker (1-3) took the loss.

Jenny Boucek was awarded the Bob Williams Award and Wendy Palmer was chosen Cavalier of the Year at the University of Virginia women's basketball banquet Wednesday night.

Boucek, the team's third-leading scorer and a GTE Academic All-America Third-team selection, and Charleata Beale were chosen the team's best defensive players.

In addition to the Cavalier of the Year award, Palmer, who was a Kodak and Associated Press All-American this season, also picked up the Rebounding, Best Offensive and Leadership awards. Palmer shared the Leadership recognition with Amy Lofstedt, Cheryl Taylor and Jackie Glessner.

The Most Improved award went to redshirt freshman Tammy Gardner; the Unsung Hero Award was given to Taylor and Chris Lesoravage; and the Coaches award was given to manager Angela O'Neal.
