BLACKSBURG BRANCH LIBRARY SET TO EXPAND

The Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Board will break ground Tuesday on the long-awaited Blacksburg branch library expansion and renovation.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the library located at 400 Draper Road. The event is open to the public.

State Sen. Madison Marye, D-Shawsville, Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Chairman Larry Linkous, Virginia Library Association President Linda Farynk and Jim Johnson, fund-raising chairman, will speak.

Johnson is expected to announce a major new fund-raising drive to supplement the $1.88 million in borrowing that county voters approved in November 1993.

Representatives of the Library Board are negotiating with the low bidder in last week's library construction bid opening, Martin Bros. Contractors Inc. The Roanoke company submitted a base bid of $2.02 million, lower than the other three bidders but still 16.5 percent higher than the original construction estimate of $1.73 million.
