BRIEFLY PUT . . .

EXPECT big crowds at Roanoke Symphony Orchestra concerts Monday night in Roanoke and Tuesday night in Blacksburg: It will be the final performances of Victoria Bond's last season as RSO conductor.

As we editorially remarked nearly a year ago, when Bond announced that this would be her final season, she "has brought an edge of excitement not only to the symphony, but also to Roanoke's artistic and cultural life in general."

She did not do it alone - a point worth remembering, lest her departure be used as an excuse for the Roanoke region to stop working for further progress in its cultural life. Even so, she remains an example of how much one person can do.

GOOD NEWS on the home front: Personal computers can be ``trained'' via software and adapters to automatically handle numerous household tasks. These include adjusting and maintaining the home's temperature, watching out for intruders, cutting lights on and off, answering the telephone and taking messages.

We're waiting to see if Windows will do windows.
