South Florida smacked five home runs and collected 20 hits en route to an 18-5 Metro Conference baseball victory over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
The Hokies (24-18 overall, 5-5 conference) took a 3-2 lead in the first inning when Josh Herman doubled home two runs, but South Florida came back with four runs in the second, including a three-run shot by Will Bland off Tech starter Sean Hummel to take a 5-3 lead. The Bulls (24-19, 8-5) put seven runs on the board in the fourth to take a 12-3 lead.
Lynchburg College advanced four players to the singles finals and all three of its doubles teams to the semifinals to take the lead after the first day of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's tennis championships in Lexington.
The Hornets, who lead with 53 points, are looking for their first ODAC title since 1984. Washington and Lee, tied for second with Guilford at 49 points, has won the past 10 titles.
Roanoke, which is tied for eighth with Randolph-Macon, was led by the No. 3 doubles team of Nathan Jones and Brian Wagaman, who pulled a major upset by defeating second-seeded Jeremy Graybill and Campbell Palmer of Hampden-Sydney 6-1, 1-6, 7-6.
Ferrum dropped into the losers' bracket of the Dixie Conference baseball tournament with a 10-2 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan in Danville.
The Panthers were outhit 16-4 as the Battlin' Bishops roughed up Ferrum pitcher Jimmy Hamilton (7-4) for 13 hits. Hamilton walked three and struck out four in 72/3 innings. The Panthers will meet Christopher Newport in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. today. If it wins, Ferrum will face the Methodist-North Carolina Wesleyan loser at 7 p.m.
Before the game, five Panthers were named to the All-Dixie Conference first team that was headlined by player of the year Chris Bryant, a shortstop for North Carolina Wesleyan. Second baseman Chad Maddox, catcher Riley Hodges, pitcher Keith Mayhew and outfielders Chad France and John Poindexter joined the shortstop on the squad. The Panthers' Nate Arland, a third baseman, was chosen for the second team, and Greensboro's Scott Rash was named coach of the year.
Defending champion Washington and Lee is locked in a close battle with Guilford at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's tennis championship in Greensboro, N.C.
The Generals have 48 points with Guilford in second with 46. Emory and Henry (31.5), Randolph-Macon (21), and Roanoke (19.5) round out the top five.
The fourth-seeded Virginia Tech women's tennis team defeated fifth-seeded Louisville 5-0 at the Metro women's tennis tournament in Tampa, Fla.
Katherine Chen (No. 2 singles), Cathy Dixon (No. 3), Julie Jackson (No. 4), Jennifer Lampert (No. 5) and Daria Ivan (No. 6) all won and will advance into today's round as the Hokies will meet top-seeded South Florida.
Former Cave Spring runner John Hawthorne led the way as the Virginia Tech men took the first-day lead with 24 points at the Metro Conference track and field championships in Tampa, Fla.
Hawthorne finished second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30 minutes, 48.50 seconds and was followed by the Hokies' Tom Lankowicz and George Probst. The Tech women finished the first day with two points.
