NAMES & CHANGES

HSMM names senior managers

Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc., an architectural, engineering and planning firm based in Roanoke, has appointed six architects and engineers to the newly created position of principal associate. They are DAN BOLT, an architect who joined the firm in 1987; BEN FINK, a project manager who joined HSMM in 1981 as a mechanical engineer; BEN FORTNER, an electrical engineer who came to the company in 1991; CHARLES PORTER, a civil engineer who has been with HSMM since 1964; DAVID SMITH, an engineer who came to the company in 1987 as a project manager; and BILL ZOLLMAN, a civil engineer who joined HSMM in 1967.

As senior managers, they have rights, responsibilities and authority as the officers of the corporation. HSMM employs 390 people in 10 offices in the mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States.

ADVERTISING

MARTY HALL, vice president and treasurer of System4 Advertising Agency Inc. of Roanoke, has been named to the board of directors of the Shenandoah Valley Travel Association, where he will be on the marketing committee.

COLLEGES

PHILIP BREEZE, formerly associate director of university relations for extension at Virginia Tech, has been named director of marketing for National Business College, based in Roanoke. Breeze will direct the marketing efforts for the college's campuses in Bluefield, Bristol, Charlottesville, Danville, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, Martinsville and Roanoke.

HOSPITALITY

MARK McDERMOTT has been appointed executive chef at the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel, where he will be responsible for designing all menus and managing the kitchen. He comes to Roanoke from the Albany Marriott in New York.

LAW

SUSAN W. SPANGLER, a partner in the law firm of Wooten & Hart, has recently received the 1994 Outstanding Young Woman of the Year award from the Roanoke Jaycees.

ORGANIZATIONS

MARGARET THACKER of Gurtner Graphics & Printing Co. in Salem was named the 1994 Associate of the Year by the Roanoke Regional Homes Builders Association. Also, BOB FLYNN of Royal Construction Co. Inc. in Moneta was named the 1994 Builder of the Year. The association's top award, the Presidential Award, was given to DAVID VAUGHN of Dominion Builders in Roanoke for his outstanding and exceptional contributions to both the association and the building industry over a sustained period of time.

RETAIL

ALAN C. ZEIGLER has been promoted to vice president-customer services at Grand Piano & Furniture Co., a 21-store furniture retail chain based in Roanoke. He formerly was manager of the company's Grand Interiors store in Roanoke. In his new position, Zeigler will oversee the company's customer service efforts. He joined Grand Piano in 1971 as a sales associate.
