POOL GOES DISTANCE IN 2-1 AVALANCHE WIN

SALEM STOPS its seven-game losing streak, beating Winston-Salem behind the pitcher's seven-hitter.

Matt Pool gave up only one earned run in a complete-game victory as the Salem Avalanche ended its seven-game losing streak by beating the Winston-Salem Warthogs 2-1 on Saturday night in Carolina League baseball.

Pool (2-1) gave up seven hits, four walks - including two intentionally - and struck out four in pitching Salem's first complete game of the season. Prince William's Brian Woods has the only other complete game in the league this year.

Salem took the lead on John Giudice's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning. With the score tied at 1, the Avalanche's Brian Culp walked and went to second on a passed ball that eluded Winston-Salem catcher Paul Bako. After Pedro Carranza moved Culp to third with a bloop single, Giudice drove him home with a fly ball to deep right field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pool walked three batters - one intentionally - before striking out Donald Broach to end the bases-loaded threat. Pool allowed one runner in the final two innings.

Winston-Salem starter Curt Lyons had a perfect game going for 41/3 innings before Culp doubled. Lyons gave up a two-out home run to Edgard Velasquez that tied the score in the sixth inning. It was the second home run in as many nights for Velasquez.

The Warthogs took a 1-0 lead on Brian Wilson's third-inning homer.
