DUDLEY 5TH AT B.A.S.S. TOURNAMENT

Lynchburg fisherman James Dudley just missed qualifying for the Bass Masters Classic, finishing fifth overall and second in the Eastern Region at the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Championship held on the Mississippi River.

John Parks of Aztec, N.M. won the event which carried a purse of $15,000 after weighing three bass in Saturday's final round for seven pound, seven ounces, and a three-day total of nine bass, 22 pounds, and one ounce. Gerry Jooste of Zimbabwe finished in second place with a three-day total of 17 pounds, one ounce while collecting $7,000. George Acord of Washington Boro, Pa., came in third with a tournament total of three bass, 14 pounds, four ounces.

Dudley finished second in the Eastern Region just behind Acord with three bass, seven pounds, 13 ounces. Dudley was in fourth place after Friday's round, but managed to jump two spots to second in the final round. Dudley missed a 5-pounder Friday that probably cost him first place.

Despite his performance, Dudley missed out on the automatic bid for the Bass Masters Classic since only the winner of each region advances. Parks, Jooste, Acord, all receive automatic bids for winning the Western, Central, and Eastern Regions, respectively. Rick Pelletier of Bloomington, Maine won the Northern Region and Douglas Caskey of Madison, Ky. won the Southern Region.

In other sports in the region:

Virginia Commonwealth defeated Virginia Tech 4-0 in the semifinals of the Metro Conference men's tennis championships held in Richmond.

Boris Kodjoe defeated Tech's Marck Pfeil 6-2, 6-1 and Jonas Elmblad beat Miki Poszrai of Virginia Tech 6-0, 6-1. The Hokies' Chiraq Patel lost 6-2, 6-3. The Rams also swept both Hokies doubles teams.

Methodist eliminated Ferrum from the Dixie Conference baseball tournament, edging the Panthers 6-4 in Danville.

After Ferrum beat Christopher Newport 13-9 in the afternoon to stay alive, Methodist roughed up Panthers starter Kevin Anderson (3-3) for six runs in two innings. Keith Mayhew came on in relief and shut out the Monarchs (24-15-1) on two hits the rest of the way, but Ferrum (29-9) never could make up the deficit.

Five Washington and Lee singles players won championships and the Generals made a sweep in doubles competition in winning their fifth straight ODAC women's tennis championship in Greensboro, N.C.

Marilyn Baker won her second straight title at No.1 singles with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Guilford's Jamie Campbell. Baker was named the ODAC's player of the year and Generals coach Cinda Rankin was tabbed coach of the year.

The Generals got singles championships from Natalie Garcia, Erika Shapard, Anna O'Connor and Shelly Sunderman. The teams of Baker-Garcia, O'Connor-Sapard and Julie Ayers-Berry Blankenship came away with doubles titles.

Lynchburg edged Washington and Lee by two points to win the ODAC men's tennis championship in Lexington. Lynchburg had just one individual champion - Chris Lundmark at No.5 singles - but finished no lower than third at any flight in accumulating 61 points. Washington and Lee, which scored 59, won a pair of doubles championships, as Chris McNaughton and Jesse Taylor claimed the No.1 title and Ryan Aday and Clay Richards won at No.3.

Top-seeded South Florida defeated Virginia Tech 5-2 in the second round of the Metro Conference women's tennis tournament at Tampa. The Hokies - whose two wins came from Jennifer Dinello and Cathy Dixon - will play either Tulane or Virginia Commonwealth in the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. today.

Five members of Washington and Lee's women's track and field team won events at Harrisonburg as the Generals won the inaugural Old Dominion Athletic Conference outdoor championship.

Sara Gilbert won the high jump, Sue Deutsch captured the 1500-meter run and Kim Herring finished first in the 800. Sandra Holmes won the javelin and Josephine Schaeffer finished first in the mile as Washington and Lee outdistanced second-place Lynchburg 145-120. Roanoke was third with 88 points.

Renae Rose of Roanoke was chosen women's athlete of the meet. She won the triple jump, 100 and 200 meters.Teammate Jaime Leddy won the 400 hurdles and Britt Carlson finished second in the high hurdles.

Washington and Lee's men's team finished third behind Lynchburg, which won with 196 points and Bridgewater, which was second at 132.Roanoke was fourth (75), as Courtney Fitch won the long jump and high jump and James Maybury won the 1500

The Virginia Tech track and field teams both stand in second place after the second day of competition at the Metro Conference Outdoor Championships in Tampa, Fla.

Michelle Smith won the discus throw and finished second in the hepathlon as the Tech women finished with 48 points. South Florida is first at 49. Greg Henley finished in a second-place tie in the long jump as the Hokie men amassed 55 points. Virginia Commonwealth is in first place with 57 points.

Center fielder Kevin Barker hit a pair of home runs and freshman pitcher Denny Wagner pitched six solid innings as Virginia Tech defeated South Florida 6-4 in a Metro Conference baseball game in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (25-18, 6-5) took a 1-0 lead on Barker's solo shot in the first inning, and then added three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Barker added another solo homer in the sixth to give Tech a 5-3 lead and Charlie Gillian came on in relief of Wagner in the seventh inning to earn his fifth save.

Rob McCandless singled home Donnie Fields from second with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Radford an 11-10 come-from-behind win in the second game of a Big South baseball doubleheader over UMBC in Radford. The Retrievers won the first game 17-8.

Radford (23-19, 10-4) sent the game into extra innings on a run-scoring double by McCandless, who was then thrown out at the plate on a double by Joe Raccuia on a potential game-ending play. Travis Toms (3-1) got the win in relief by going 32/3 innings and allowing just three hits.

In the first game, UMBC (18-16, 7-7) took advantage of eight Radford errors and pounded out 19 hits. The Retrievers scored in every inning but the second. Kelly Dampeer led Radford in the first game with a three-run homer, his 15th of the year.

Roanoke College built a six-goal lead in the first half, then shut out Randolph-Macon in the second half en route to a 16-4 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's lacrosse. Lisa Franzino led the Maroons with three goals and three assists, and Ali Oglesby had two goals and three assists.

At Radford, Paul Thompson and Adam Randall scored three goals to lead Virginia Tech (9-8) to a 10-8 lacrosse win over Radford. Mike Basto and Corey Fenley had two goals for Radford (2-10).

At White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Virginia took a 22-8 lead over West Virginia in the first day of competition of the annual Team Matches tournament. In the day's only senior match, Jim Kite and Bob Moyers of Virginia defeated Jack Forbes of Morgantown and Jim Ward of Huntington 6-0.

The Virginia pair of Scott Inman and Bill Williard defeated Harold Payne of Hurricane and Erik Tedder of Charles Town 6-0 in another match, and Keith Decker and David Partridge of Virginia beat Bill Donahoe of Hurricane and Joel Davis of Oak Hill 6-0. Tom McKnight of Galax and Vinnie Giles of Virginia split a match with Evans Harbour of Hurricane and C.J. Pagliaro of Fairmont but finished with a lower score overall to win 4-2.

Curtis Deal shot a 36-hole total of 145 as Virginia Tech finished eleventh in the first day of the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Charleston, S.C. North Carolina State is first at 571. The Hokies are 29 shots back at 600 in the 17-team competition which concludes with 18 holes today.

University of Virginia head basketball coach Jeff Jones recognized the entire men's basketball team as recipients of the Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year award Saturday ngiht at the team's annual banquet.

Several individual awards were presented at the banquet. Co-captains Chris Alexander, Cory Alexander, Junior Burrough, and Jason Williford received the Michael McCann Leadership Award. Burrough was named UVa's Most Improved Player after leading the team in scoring (18.1ppg) and rebounding (8.7 rpg). Former Patrick Henry standout Curtis Staples, who averaged 11.9 points per game and had a school and ACC freshman record 103 3-pointers, was the team's Rookie of the Year. Chris Alexander was named Virginia's Best Defensive Player and Harold Deane received awards for the best free-throw percentage (.795) and most assists (147).
