JOHNSON, Mrs. Joseph A., (Marian), a resident of 436 Court St., Abingdon, died Friday, April 21, 1995 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Smyth County, Va., and attended Emory & Henry College and was a graduate of Longwood College. She initiated the Pink Lady Volunteer Service and was a member of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church where she was very active in the Music Department. She was preceded in death by her son, Marion E. (``Whitey"") Johnson. Survivors include her husband, Joseph A. Johnson of Abingdon; one son, Joseph A. (``Jay"") Johnson Jr. of Abingdon; five grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, Jeffery Johnson, Jay Johnson, Jennifer Johnson and Mary Catherine Johnson. Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph A. (Marian) Johnson will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, in the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Chruch with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sproule and the Rev. Dr. Robert N. Lominack Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Chris Johnson, Jay Johnson, Jeff Johnson, Ed Eller, David S. Collins, Mickey Tyler. The family will receive friends at the Campbell Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening. BELL, Charles Foster, 74, of Moneta, died Friday, April 21, 1995. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie B. Bell and a daughter, Tonya Bell Sloan. Mr. Bell was a member of The Church of Christ in Salem and retired from Double Envelope after 40 years of service. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, J. Larry and Susan Bell, Moneta, Charles Leonard and Louise Bell, Roanoke; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul L. Bell, Roanoke; special friend, Donna J. Kielbowick, Moneta; several cousins; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends; and his little pet, Simon. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 24, in Fair View Cemetery, Roanoke. BOHON, Cassandra Deane, 31, of Naperville, Ill., formerly of Roanoke, Va. passed away Monday, April 10, 1995. She is survived by her mother, Joyce Lovelace, Lisle, Ill.; a sister, Teresa Ridgeway, Naperville; uncles, Ned Pugh, Christiansburg and Robert Pugh, Floyd. Memorial services were held Thursday, April 13 in Naperville. Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home in Naperville handled the arrangements.

CONNER, George Washington, 76, of Salem, died Saturday, April 22, 1995, at the VA Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Eldridge and Ila Poff Conner, and son, Jerry L. Conner. Mr. Conner was a U. S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II, and was retired from Valleydale Packers. He was a member of Edgewood Christian Church. DAMRON, Ruby Mallory, 87, of Roanoke, died Friday, April 21, 1995, in Friendship Manor Nursing Center following a long illness. She was a life-long resident of Roanoke Valley. She is survived by a son, Maynard J. Damron of California; nieces, Shirley Mallory Sullivan, Woodbridge, Va. and Kathleen Mallory Hart, Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 1995 at 1 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem, with the Rev. J. Landon Maddex officiating. DAVIS, Todd Eric, 30, of Rich Creek, died Thursday, April 20, 1995 in Princeton, W. Va. He was born in Pearisburg, Va. on November 1, 1964, and was the son of Franceina Suttle Turner, of Narrows, and the late Melburn Kyle Davis. He was a jeweler with Lilly's Jewelry Store. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Stefan Kyle Davis, of Collegedale, Tenn.; daughter, Kayla Dawn Davis, Christiansburg,; and four brothers, Scottie Davis, of Narrows, Barry Davis and Timmy Davis, both of Hales Gap, W. Va., and Billy Davis, of Cashmere, W. Va. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, April 24, 1995 in The Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service, Narrows, with Rev. Jack E. Musick officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Narrows. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m.

EVANS, Irvin E. Jr., 71, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 19, 1995. Private graveside services were conducted at Resthaven Cemetery in Princeton, W. Va. for Irvin E. Evans Jr. on Friday, April 21, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Violet L. Stephenson Evans; three sons, Maj. Irvin E. Evans III of New Orleans, La., Richard D. Evans and Jay V. Evans, both of Roanoke, Va.; stepson, Robert L. Stephenson of South Shore, Ky.; one daughter, Katherine E. Evans of Savannah, Ga.; one sister, Frances E. Litz of Richmond, Va.; one aunt, Violet Evans Carter of Roanoke, Va.; and six grandchildren. A retired Texaco official, Mr. Evans was a graduate of Princeton High School and Virginia Polytechnical Institute. He was a World War II Navy veteran, who served on the USS Foote, a destroyer. He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Roanoke and the Princeton Masonic Lodge #134. In lieu of flowers, th e family requests donations be made to the Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 3301 Ashby St., Roanoke, Va. Seaver Funeral Home, in Princeton, W. FARROW, William Dixon, 84, of Lexington, died Saturday, April 22, 1995, at his residence. Born July 29, 1910 in Rockbridge Co., he was the son of the late Minor Lee Farrow and Grace Hatcher Farrow. Mr. Farrow was a member of Oxford Presbyterian Church and Odd Fellows Lodge #58. He was preceded in death by two children, Elburn Farrow and Margie Goodbar. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Ayers Farrow, Lexington; four daughters, Helen Farrow Keith, Buchanan, Barbara Farrow Miller, Lexington, Mary McFaddin, Henderson, N.C., Joyce Farrow Maynard, Henderson, N.C.; one son, William Kenneth Farrow, Staunton; three sisters, Rachel Entsminger, Lexington, Gladys Norwood, Norlina, N.C., Martha Lee Willis, Crossville, Ala.; one brother, Joseph C. Farrow, Natural Bridge; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 24, 1995, at 3 p.m. from the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. HARRIS, Mary Katherine Ross, 70, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, April 20, 1995. She was retired from the V. A. Regional Office. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Harris; parents, William M. Ross Sr., and Flossie Saunders Ross; one brother, William M. Ross, Jr. Survivors include her son, Harvey Harris, Seattle, Wash.; one nephew, William M. (Diane) Ross III, Roanoke; two nieces, Joyce T. Ross, Roanoke, Brenda Baxter, Chesapeake; six great nephews; one great great nephew; one great great niece. A host of other relatives and many special and devoted friends. HART, Nowlin Vester, 67, of Route 2, Vinton, died Friday, April 21, 1995. He was a retired welder at N & W East End Shops. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Ollie Burress Hart; son and daughter-in-law, Joel E. and Edith L. Hart, Vinton; daughter and son-in-law, Judy A. and Jim Honaker, Vinton; daughter and son-in-law, Karen H. and Ricky Overstreet, Bedford; daughter and son-in-law, Patty H. and Larry D. Hill, Goodview; six grandchildren; three sisters, Anita Gue, Florida, Doris Kechman, Ohio, and Sandy Akers, Florida; three brothers, J. D. JONES, Elizabeth Shipplett, 80, of Sheppards, died Friday, April 21, 1995. She was born October 27, 1914, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of the late George Dinges Shipplett and Jane Jenkins Shipplett. She is survived by one daughter, Jane Jones French and her husband, Roger W. French of Richmond; one son, Marcus C. Jones Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth W. Jones of Manakin-Sabot; one brother George D. Shipplett and his wife, Gladys Shipplett of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Ashley K. Jones, Marcus C. Jones III, and Emily W. Jones all of Manakin-Sabot; one sister-in-law, Mary Hannah Jones of Richmond; and a brother-in-law, Joseph L. Jones of Lancaster, Penn. She was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church and a 1938 graduate of Longwood College and was the Executive Alumni Director for Longwood College from 1957-1974. She was a founder and past president of the Buckingham County Women's Club. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, at Smyrna United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Smyrna United Methodist Church following the service. PALMER, Virgil Paul, 81, of Oxford, Penn., formerly of Narrows, died Friday, April 21, 1995. He was a son of the late John Semion and Virginia Bessie Palmer. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a coalminer in West Virginia for approximately 20 years prior to moving to Pennsylvania and also worked for the Budd Company in Newark, Del. He retired in 1976 from the N.V.F. Company, Kenneth Square, Penn. He was a devote d father and family man and enjoyed gardening, traveling and fishing. He was preceded in death by son, Curtis Ray Palmer and two daughters, Lida Dorine Palmer and Loretta Starlene Vronick. Survivors include his wife, Winnie O. Prince Palmer of Oxford, Penn.; ten sons, Carl E. Palmer of St. Petersburg, Fla., William S. Palmer, Parksburg, Penn., Clarence G. Palmer, Parksburg, Penn., Virgil P. Palmer Jr., Honey Brook, Penn., John A. Palmer, Stevens, Penn., Tennis G. Palmer, Oxford, Penn., Robert C. Palmer, Lancaster, Penn., Gary M. Palmer, Rising Sun, Md., Ronald L. ROBERTSON, Walter A., 83, of Salem, died Thursday, April 20, 1995. He was previously employed by Hart Motor Co. Mr. Robertson was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Roanoke Moose Lodge #284, and attended Belmont Presbyterian Church, Roanoke. Survivors include his children and their spouses, James A. and Lynn Robertson, M. Spence and Kathy Robertson, Kathy and Danny Harris, all of Salem; sister, Josephine Kimsey, Gloucester Point; brothers, T. Greer Robertson, P. L. SHUTTS, Noel Archer, 80, of Salem, passed away Friday, April 21, 1995. Mr. Shutts received a BA Degree from Fairmont State College in Fairmont, W. Va., where he was active in Dramatics. He received his Masters Degree from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. He was a Lt. Commander in the U. S. Navy Air Corp and taught navigation at Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. He remained active in the Naval Reserves. He is a member of the Retired Officers Association. He was employed as a chemist for the St. Regis Paper Co. in Jacksonville, Fla. for 13 years. After coming to the Roanoke Valley, he taught high school and was a chemist for the City of Roanoke. He was a member of First Methodist Church Fairmont, W. Va. He is survived by a daughter, Kathy L. Shutts of Woodbridge, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. George Harmison of Petersburg, W. Va. and Mrs. Herman Pinkerton, Abingdon, Va.; one nephew; five nieces; and several great-nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, April 24, 1995, at Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Robert A. Sadler officiating. SLATERBECK, George G., 85, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, April 13, 1995. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Garden Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. He was in business in Roanoke for many years, a member of First Presbyterian Church and also the Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Edith L. Slaterbeck, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; children, Robert Slaterbeck, Baltimore, Md., Ann S. Soper, Haupague, N.Y., Polly Boothe, Smithfield, June Capehart, Windsor, Laura Pittman, Battery Park, Shirley Reckley, Norfolk, Cindy Fries, Roanoke; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. TYREE, Lindsey Washington, 81, of Buena Vista, died April 21, 1995 in a Lexington hospital. He was born in Rockbridge County, November 7, 1913 the son of the late Leonard S. and Ella Clark Tyree. He was retired from the City of Buena Vista and was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Tyree and Philander Tyree, and one sister, Martha Tyree Sorrells. Surviving are his wife, Hallie Clark Tyree; two daughters, Jo Ann T. Hudson and Judy T. Conner, both of Buena Vista; four sons, Alfred W. Tyree of Gretna, Ralph E. Tyree of Clifton Forge, Dewey W. Tyree, David D. Tyree, both of Buena Vista; four sisters, Ann Smith of Locust Hill, Juanita Andrews of Madison Heights, Isabelle Robertson of Swoop, and Nellie Cash of Greenville; fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at the Lomax Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Ballar d Shepherd and the Rev. Conald Fogus. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.
