WINSTON-SALEM BEATS ERROR-PRONE SALEM 7-0

Perhaps the perfect tonic for Salem's woes would be a good dose of infield practice.

The Avalanche committed a season-high six errors, including two that led to a five-run Winston-Salem sixth inning as the Warthogs shut out Salem 7-0 on Sunday in a Carolina League game.

Winston-Salem (10-7) got on the board in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Cobi Cradle that scored Paul Bako. The Warthogs led 1-0 until the middle of the sixth inning when both teams went to the dugout and waited through a 1-hour, 44-minute rain delay.

Reliever Neil Garrett came on for Salem in the bottom of the sixth inning and faced six batters without retiring any. The right-hander gave up five Winston-Salem runs before being chased after Brian Wilson's two-run single as the Warthogs sent 11 men to plate and took a 6-0 lead. Only two of those runs were earned as Garrett committed two errors in the inning. The season-high six errors tops the four Salem has committed twice this season as defensive problems continue to plague the Avalanche.

The Warthogs' last run came in the seventh on a solo blast by Mike Meggers, who was 1-for-36 before hitting his first home run.

Salem (7-10) collected six hits, and three of those came off the bat of shortstop Chris Sexton. Winston-Salem starter Eddie Priest (3-1) shackled the Avalanche for six innings, giving up no runs on four hits while striking out four and walking none. Jason Kummerfeldt went the last three innings to pick up his second save.

Salem starter Mike Saipe (1-2) took the loss after going four innings and giving up one run on two hits despite walking six. Saipe started in place of Doug Walls, who sat out the game after being suspended for one turn in the rotation for throwing at a Kinston Indians batter last week.
