HIGHLANDERS ERASE MARKS IN 28-6 ROMP

Radford University set numerous school records Sunday in a 28-6 rout of visiting Maryland-Baltimore County in Big South Conference baseball.

The Highlanders (24-19 overall, 11-4 conference) set school marks for runs and hits (26) in a game and an inning (13 runs and 10 hits in the fourth). The first eight Radford hitters reached base in the big inning as the Highlanders broke a 4-4 tie. They roughed up UMBC reliever Steve James for nine hits, four walks and 11 earned runs in one inning.

Kelly Dampeer, a former Northside High School star, matched a school record with five runs scored as he went 5-for-6 with three RBI. Duane Filchner was 4-for-7 with three RBI, tying a school record for at-bats.

Jim Abbott (7-2) picked up the victory, matching Phil Leftwich's school record set in 1989. Abbott also set a school record for strikeouts in a season with 94, three more than Leftwich had in 1990.

UMBC's record slipped to 18-17, 7-8.

In other sports in the region:

South Florida rallied for two runs in the last two innings to edge Virginia Tech 5-4 in a Metro Conference baseball game in Blacksburg.

Brian Fitzgerald (4-5) struck out a career-high 11, but took the loss for the Hokies (25-19, 6-6). The left-hander gave up eight hits, four earned runs and three walks in 82/3 innings. Steven Boyles picked up the victory in relief for the Bulls (25-20, 9-6). Catcher Josh Herman, a former William Byrd High School standout, led the Tech offense with two hits and two RBI.

Virginia Tech won its last home game of the women's lacrosse season, defeating Monmouth 13-7 behind three goals and one assist from Roanoke native Heather Dent.

Amy Mantooth scored four goals and Alice Matos and Christie Cade added three goals and one assist each for the Hokies (2-6), who close their season at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson. Danielle Brzyski scored three goals for Monmouth (3-6).

Virginia shot a 302 to finish tied for third in the Palmetto Intercollegiate Golf Classic at the 6,918-yard par-72 Charleston (S.C.) National Country Club as heavy hail and high winds caused two delays. North Carolina State finished at 871 to win the tournament. Augusta was second, at 881, and Wake Forest and Virginia tied for third, at 882. Virginia Tech shot a 301 to finish ninth, at 901.

Keith Nolan of East Tennessee State and Todd Ormsby of North Carolina State tied for individual honors at 6-under-par 210. Virginia's Jimmy Flippen finished tied with five others for sixth at 217 and teammate Simon Cooke finished 11th at 218. Curtis Deal of Virginia Tech shot a 77 to finish at 222, tied for 20th individually. Teammate Robbie Rasmussen carded a 73, David Havens shot a 75 and Brian Sharp had a 76.

Jay Adams held Davidson to four hits in eight innings, leading VMI to a 2-1 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference baseball.

Adams (4-5) walked six and struck out four to lead the Keydets (17-26, 10-14). Billy Goodrich earned his second save, holding the Wildcats (18-26, 12-12) to one walk in the ninth.

The Virginia Tech women's tennis team defeated Tulane 5-1 to finish third at the Metro Conference championships in Tampa, Fla. Katherine Chen, Cathy Dixon, Julie Jackson, Jennifer Lampert and Daria Ivan won their singles matches to power the Hokies, who finished the spring with a 16-4 record.

The Virginia Tech men's tennis team won three of five singles matches played and both doubles matches completed to defeat Tulane 4-2 and finish third at the Metro Conference championships in Richmond. South Florida defeated Virginia Commonwealth 4-2 to win the title.

Miki Pusztai, Chad Toleafoa and Chirag Patel each won singles matches for the Hokies. Pusztai teamed with Oliver Mayo and Patel paired with Adam Gottfried to win both doubles matches.

Michelle Smith won the shot put and discus as the Virginia Tech women finished second and the men third at the Metro Conference outdoor track and field championships in Tampa, Fla.

Erin Graham finished second in the 100-meter hurdles, third in the 400 hurdles and sixth in the javelin as the Tech women amassed 117 points. South Florida won the title with 153 points.

Jason Fullmer won the 110 hurdles and Justin Davis captured the 400 hurdles as the Hokies' men finished with 124 points. Virginia Commonwealth won the championship with 159 points and South Florida was second with 147.

VMI finished second at the Southern Conference men's track and field championships behind a number of strong performances Saturday night in Huntington, W.Va. Appalachian State won the title with 131 points, and the Keydets finished with 119.

VMI finished 1-2-3-4 in the shot put, led by Ryan Early's winning heave of 16.39 meters. Joe Anwah won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.82 seconds, and Joe Dubose was the 400 hurdles champion with a time of 52.23 seconds.

Reserves helped offset the loss of three starters to injuries and two others to red-card ejections as the Roanoke Star under-14 White team won the Gold Division of the ninth annual Johnson City (Tenn.) Soccer Invitational.

John Flanagan had two shutouts in preliminary games and did not give up a goal before he left the championship game, a 5-1 victory over Morristown, Tenn.

The Star under-9 White team was the runner-up in the Silver Division, going 2-1. Fielding Lake had two shutouts to lead a defense that also featured Dillon Lineberry and Vinnie Mascitelli, and the offense was led by Travis Bryant and Seth Chapman.

The Salem Sabres under-11 Maroon team finished second in the Blue Division, compiling a 2-1 record. Josh Bromfield led the offense, Ryan Hornady anchored the defense and Shane Draper was solid in goal.

Bo Howell of Christiansburg was awarded the victory in Saturday night's 35-lap Limited Sportsman race at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

The apparent winner, Terry Lawson of Christiansburg, was disqualified for using an improper number of spacers on one wheel. The disqualification also moved Newport's Aaron Deplazes to second, Indian Valley's Hank Turman to third and Salem's Jay McCray to fourth.

Drew Thomas, a member of Roanoke's Xaloy bicycle team, won the Category 3 race Saturday at the Wellspring Criterion in Raleigh, N.C. Teammate Ben Nielsen finished second in the junior race and fourth in the Category 4 competition. On Sunday, Ed Shepherd placed second in the Category 3 race and Nielsen finished fourth in the junior competition.
