The performance is a mixture of music, videos, dance and straight talk designed to motivate members of the young audience to develop positive self-images and avoid violence and substance abuse.
Students may participate through interactive video. The audience is projected live on the set's large screen.
Stalnecker has performed for schools and youth organizations for the last three years. The 1994-95 tour includes more than 60 cities in the United States.
Jeremiah Shaw, a ninth-grader at Blacksburg Middle School, won the first-place prize of $200 at the 13th annual Young Artists' Awards Competition held April 9 at Roanoke College playing David Popper's "Tarantella" on cello.
Jeremiah, who has studied the cello since the age of 7, travels to the Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio twice a month for lessons and has been a member of the Roanoke Youth Symphony since 1992.
He is the son of Tom and Teresa Shaw of Blacksburg.
Anne Kuykendall's kindergarten class at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School is the grand prize winner in the kindergarten division of a Candlewick Press national contest judging student-illustrated and authored books for its entry, "We Love Our Teeth."
The class will receive a $200 set of autographed, hardcover Read and Wonder books.
New River Community College and the Southwest Virginia Governor's School will sponsor "SCIENCE IN MOTION" classes July 12-16 for incoming fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth graders.
The classes in computers, geology, astronomy, geometric design, ecology, physical science and chemistry will be offered 8:30-11:30 a.m. or noon- 3 p.m.
The course fee is $50, or $95 for two. The registration deadline is May 15.

Seniors-of-the-Month
CARRIE BISHOP of Auburn High School is a four-year member of the school's peer support group and a two-year member of the National Honor Society. She also participates in the art, Beta and science clubs. Carrie is the daughter of Kenneth and Mary Bishop of Riner.
BRIAN DIFFELL of Blacksburg High School is president of the geography club and a member of the marching, concert, jazz, all-district and all-county bands. He spent last summer in Germany as an exchange student. Brian is the son of Jerry and Catherine Diffell of Blacksburg.
MAUREEN JACKSON of Christiansburg High School is president of the Girls' Athletic Association and Students Against Drunk Driving. She is a four-year member of the basketball and outdoor track teams. Maureen is the daughter of Lenore Jackson of Christiansburg.
CHRISTINA DUDLEY of Shawsville High School is a four-year member of the Spanish club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She plays tennis and runs on the cross country team. Christina is the daughter of Morris and Maxine Dudley of Christiansburg.
Student Shows
The fifth-graders at Margaret Beeks Elementary have formed Behind the Curtain, an opera company and are writing, producing and performing an original opera, "DIFFERENCES."
This is the fifth year the school has participated in the Creating Original Opera Program, sponsored by the Metropolitan Opera Guild Education Department and Montgomery County Public Schools.
Performance times are Monday, 7:30 p.m.; May 2, 9:30 a.m.; May 3, 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; May 4, 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and May 5, 9:30 a.m.
The advanced drama students at Floyd County High School will present two versions of Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple," Friday and Saturday.
The male version, featuring the familiar roommates Oscar and Felix, is set for Friday at 8 p.m. The female version, to be performed Saturday at 8 p.m., features equally entertaining roommates Olive and Florence.
Tickets, available at the door are $4, or $6 for both shows.
Shawsville High School will sponsor "A NIGHT OF THE ARTS" tonight at 7. Ninth- through 12th-grade students will present works of literature, art, drama and music. A reception follows the event.
