ROANOKE HONORS LEE AND WILSON

Seniors Bryant Lee and Crystal Wilson, who earned honorable mention All-America honors this season, were named Roanoke College athletes of the year Monday night at the college's annual student-athlete appreciation night.

Lee earned first-team honors in the Old Dominion Dominion Athletic Conference in basketball and was an All-South Region selection, averaging 15.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He also was a member of the Maroons' track and field team and won the javelin competition at the ODAC championships on Saturday.

Lee, whose father died of cancer on New Year's Eve, also was awarded the Michael Robin Murphy Award, which is presented to the senior who has demonstrated extraordinary perseverance in pursuit of academic and athletic goals.

Wilson earned All-ODAC and All-South Region honors while helping the Maroons win the ODAC championship and earn an NCAA Tournament berth in basketball. She set a school record with 239 rebounds this season. Wilson also was a standout on the Maroons' volleyball team.

Susan Brown of Lexington was named the winner of the Paul W. Rice Memorial Award, which honors the athlete who has made a significant contribution to campus life. Brown has lettered in basketball, lacrosse and volleyball each of the past four seasons.

In other sports in the region:

Jimmy Hamilton pitched a four-hitter as Ferrum defeated visiting Lynchburg 9-3 in college baseball.

Hamilton (8-4) gave up one earned run and struck out four. Ryan Brittle and Todd Cunningham led the offense for the Panthers (30-9), each going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Washington and Lee's Jay Ingram led the individual scoring, carding a 71, and the Generals were first overall through one day of the ODAC's men's golf championships in Richmond.

Ingram led Bridgewater's Charlie Meek and Lynchburg's Jeff Preston by five strokes, and the Generals had a 309 total to lead second-place Guilford by four at The Crossings. Roanoke was sixth, at 335.

Lynchburg's Mike Ramsden had the shot of the day when he aced No.8, a 162-yard hole. The tournament concludes today.

Washington and Lee (9-4 overall, 6-1 conference) is seeded first and Roanoke (9-4, 6-1) is second as the ODAC women's lacrosse tournament begins today with a pair of first-round matchups.

Fifth-seeded Bridgewater (5-9, 3-4) visits fourth-seeded Lynchburg (8-6, 5-2) at 4 p.m., with the winner visiting W&L at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Sixth-seeded Sweet Briar (7-8, 2-5) travels to third-seeded Randolph-Macon (12-4, 5-2), with the winner advancing to meet Roanoke at 3 p.m. Friday at W&L.

Chip Sullivan, the golf pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club, qualified for match play in the Middle Atlantic PGA 48th Match Play Championship at Turf Valley Hotel and Country Club in Columbia, Md.

Sullivan fired a 35 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine en route to a 72. Sullivan finished 14th, with the top 16 advancing to the match-play round. Sullivan will be paired with Brian Lehnhard, who fired a 67 in his qualifying round.
