REGULAR-SEASON VICTORS GO ON TO WIN TOURNAMENTS|

More often than not, winning the regular-season title predicts post-season success.

That was proved true in the results of the men's basketball leagues in Christiansburg.

Two of the three champions in the season-long play repeated their triumphs in the tournament.

The only surprise came in the Men's Over 28 Slowbreak tournament. There, regular season runner-up Shelor Chevrolet (10-5, 7-5) won three games to take the title without a loss in the double-elimination affair. And two of those victories came against New River Pontiac-GMC-Nissan, 48-44 and 47-38. New River (12-4, 10-2) had claimed the regular season title while losing only once in 12 games.

In the Men's Open League, Southern States (16-1, 13-1) led the way, literally. Southern States added the tournament title to its regular-season crown with three wins. It beat third-seeded Corning in the finals 72-55. Earlier, Southern States had edged No. 4 Original Flow 49-46 in the semifinals and downed The Currents 48-39 in the quarterfinals. Corning (13-4, 11-3) upset regular-season runner-up Christiansburg Motors (13-3, 12-2) 67-63 to reach the finals.

And in the Men's Church League, regular-season champ Presbyterian (13-2, 10-2) was not hard pressed as it won the tournament. It beat St. Paul I 53-43 to claim the title. St. Paul I (8-9, 5-7) lost its first game but then won three straight, eliminating each of the other teams in the league before falling in the finals.
