FERRUM STAR SETS SCHOOL, COLLEGE MARKS

Ferrum pitcher Keith Mayhew broke one NCAA Division III record and one school record Tuesday in leading Ferrum to an 8-6 non-conference baseball victory over Hampden-Sydney in Ferrum.

Mayhew (12-1) went seven innings, gave up two hits and one run while striking out 12. His 12 strikeouts gave him 134 for the season, breaking the school record held by Billy Wagner, who had 133 in 1993. Mayhew has 335 strikeouts for his career, which breaks the NCAA Division III record also held by Wagner, who had 327 from 1991-93.

Jason Wilson paced the Ferrum offense by going 2-for-3 with four RBI.

In Kingsport, Tenn., center fielder Scott Schroeffel had a two-run home run and four runs batted in as Tennessee defeated Virginia Tech 10-8 in a non-conference baseball game.

Tennessee (34-10) built a 7-3 lead before the Hokies (25-20) cut their deficit to two runs. John Darlington pitched 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief for the Vols after Tech cut it to 9-7. Bo Durkac had a solo home run to lead off the game and finished 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead Tech. Ed Lewis was 5-for-5 for Tennessee.

R.A. Dickey (11-1) was the winning pitcher and Ron Preston (2-6) took the loss. The Hokies entertain Virginia today at 3 p.m. in Blacksburg.

Lynchburg College sophomore shortstop Kelly Fackler was named softball player of the year in the Old Dominon Athletic Conference in voting by the league's coaches.

Fackler, a graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High School, finished the regular season with a league-best .483 batting average and .745 slugging percentage. She set a school record with 70 hits this season and her batting average was also a school best. Fackler tied the NCAA record for consecutive hits with 12.

Lynchburg's Aubrey Moon was voted the league's top coach after guiding the Hornets to their second straight ODAC championship and a 25-17 record.

GOLF\ Sullivan falls in quarterfinals

Hanging Rock teaching professional Chip Sullivan lost 1-up to Senior PGA Tour player Bruce Lehnhard in the quarterfinals of the 48th Middle Atlantic PGA Match-Play golf championship at Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Md. Sullivan had advanced to the quarters with a 5-and-4 triumph over Lehnhard's son, Brian. Bruce Lehnhard faces Jack Skilling of Columbia, Md., in one semifinal today, while top qualifier David Quelland meets Glen Barrett in the other match.

Washington and Lee captured its second consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference golf championship with a one shot victory over Guilford at The Crossings in Glen Alen.

The Generals, who had a four-shot lead over Guilford after the first 18 holes, shot a 322 on Tuesday to hold off the Quakers. Jay Ingram led the Generals by firing a two-round total of 152 to edge out Jamie McPherson of Guilford and Galen Foulois of Randolph-Macon by one shot for medalist honors. Ingram followed Monday's 71 with an 81 on Tuesday. The Generals' Gam Mattingly birdied three holes on the back nine Tuesday for to finish fourth in the individual competition.

BASKETBALL\ Dalton honored by Radford

Senior center Antoine Dalton was named the most valuable player at the Radford University men's banquet Sunday.

Dalton averaged 15.0 points per game and six rebounds per game, ranking second best on the team each category. He led the team with 24 blocked shots and shot a career-high 55.7 percent from the field. The other senior on the Radford team, Chris Harvey, received the Doug and Norville Tate Outstanding Career Contribution Award. Harvey also received awards as the team's top defensive player and rebounder.

Other award winners were junior guard Travis Wells of Collinsville, who received the Student Athlete Award for best performance in the classroom. Wells was one of 55 student-athletes honored for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better. Chibi Johnson of Denmark, S.C., was the recipient of the Hustlin' Highlander Award, and Anthony Walker earned the award for leading scorer (15.3 ppg), leading free-throw shooter (73.9), and team leader in assists (5.4 apg).

Liberty University has announced the signing of Eyo Effiong, a 6-8, 215-pound power forward from Lagos, Nigeria.

Effiong led the Comets of Lagos to consecutive national club championships. He averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds a game, and is considered to be one of the best players in Nigeria. On June 3, Effiong will take his SAT test, which will determine his eligibility status for the 1995-96 season.
