RADFORD - A musical tribute to the victims of last week's bombing in Oklahoma City will be performed tonight by the Radford University Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. The band will start tonight's spring concert with "In Memoriam" by composer John O'Reilly. The main theme of the musical piece is paraphrased from Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah."
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Preston Hall Auditorium. The program will also include music by Shostakovich, Herold and others.
Professor Mark Camphouse, the university's director of bands, said the students believe a need to make some kind of appropriate gesture toward the bombing and tying the power of music with the tragedy would connect with the audience.
Camphouse said the tragedy hit close to home for him because he taught for one year (1976-77) at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, just 20 miles from Oklahoma City. He also played with Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestra and played concerts at the Oklahoma City Civic Center, just a few blocks from the federal building.
For more information call Camphouse at 831-5103.
