WELLS' SHOT LIFTS SALEM TO VICTORY

Mark Wells smacked a grand slam in the fifth inning Tuesday night to help the Salem Avalanche beat Durham 7-2 in Carolina League baseball.

Pedro Carranza added a pair of solo homers as the Avalanche collected eight hits off four Durham pitchers in winning for only the second time in 11 games. His fourth-inning shot resulted in the first earned run of the season off Durham starter Tommy Harrison, who had pitched 21 2/3 innings without yielding a run.

Harrison (1-1) was lifted in the fifth inning after loading the bases, and Wells foiled the strategy by belting a home run over the right-field wall off reliever Ken Raines on a 3-2 pitch.

It was the fifth home run of the season for Wells, who struck out his other four times up. Wells is tied with Bruce Aven of Kinston for the league lead in homers and has 13 runs batted in.

The winner for Salem was starter Keith Barnes (1-1), who went seven innings and scattered five hits, gave up one run and struck out five. Scott Larock pitched the final two innings, giving up a solo home run to Kevin Webb in the ninth.

EXTRA BASES: Salem placed pitcher Mike Zolecki (elbow) and Neil Garrett (shoulder) on the disabled list. Both are expected to miss at least a week. Replacements on the roster could be announced today.
