WONDERFUL EFFORT BEATS AVALANCHE

WONDERFUL MONDS plays the starring role in the Durham Bulls' 7-5 Carolina League victory over Salem.

The Salem Avalanche can blame its latest Carolina League loss on a guy named Wonderful.

Wonderful Monds, the fleet Durham outfielder, walked in the seventh and came all the way around without the benefit of a hit to score the deciding run in the Bulls' 7-5 victory over the Avalanche on Wednesday night.

After Salem (8-12) had battled back to tie the score at 4, Monds took over in the seventh. He drew a leadoff walk from losing pitcher Barry Goldman (0-3), stole second, then scurried to third when the peg of Salem catcher Mike Higgins bounded into center field. Monds trotted home on Kevin Webb's sacrifice fly.

Durham added two runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Miquel Correa and Manny Jimenez to go ahead 7-4.

Salem rallied in the ninth. Forry Wells drove in one run with a two-out double. Nate Holden then stepped to the plate representing the tying run, but struck out to end the game.

The Bulls took a 3-0 lead in the first off Salem left-hander Doug Million. The key blow was a two-run homer by Durham first baseman Randall Simon.

Down 4-0, Salem cut its deficit in half in the fourth on RBI singles by John Giudice and Pedro Carranza.

The Avalanche tied it in the fifth on Edgard Velasquez's two-run homer. It was Velasquez's third home run in the six games Salem has played on the trip.

The Avalanche and Bulls wrap up the four-game series tonight at 7:30, when Salem's Matt Pool (2-1) faces Durham's John LeRoy (0-2).

EXTRA BASES: Salem, which will be shooting for a series split tonight, returns to Municipal Field on Friday, when it opens a seven-game home stand against Frederick and Durham. ... In a rarity, Salem didn't commit an error. The Avalanche has been plagued by shoddy fielding so far this young season. ... Correa was 4-for-4 and knocked in two runs. ... The Bulls put the test to Higgins' arm. Durham attempted to steal seven times and was successful three times. ... Salem's mounds corps of Million, Goldman, Jeff Locklear and Jeff Sobkoviak had trouble locating the plate, walking eight.
