A long-vacant building at 309 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Roanoke has been sold, and its new owners plan to open a wine shop. F.I. Tucker of Roanoke has agreed to buy the building, which is on the west side of Jefferson between Church and Kirk avenues. The purchase price was not disclosed.
The building had been owned by Dr. Wayne Fralin of Roanoke and was used many years ago as his downtown medical center. Dennis R. Cronk and Michael M. Waldvogel of Waldvogel, Poe & Cronk Real Estate Group Inc. handled the transaction.
Waldvogel said the first floor of the building, which will undergo extensive renovations, has been leased to Lee & Edwards Wine Merchants Inc.
The new business, scheduled to open in August, will sell wines, specialty beers and gourmet foods. Waldvogel said the store will feature a system that allows customers to taste wine. It also will include a temperature and humidity-controlled wine cellar.
The second floor will be held for future expansion of the wine business. The third floor, developed previously as an apartment, will remain residential and is leased.
