VIRGINIA RIPS TECH IN BASEBALL

Virginia used 16 hits and a season-high six Hokie errors to defeat Virginia Tech 13-5 in a non-conference baseball game on Wednesday at English Field in Blacksburg.

Virginia (20-26) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first when the Hokies committed three errors. The Cavaliers added two runs in the third and one in the fourth before scoring five runs in the fifth to take a 13-0 lead.

Virginia Tech scored two runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI groundouts. Tech added one run in the eighth and two in the ninth when third baseman Bo Durkac homered over the left-field fence with Gerald Parr aboard.

Durkac's other hit was a double in the fourth. It was his 58th career double, which set a school record.

Parr and Matt Reynolds of Roanoke each had a pair of hits for Virginia Tech (25-21).

Justin Counts had four singles for the Cavaliers. R.J. Slutz and E.J. Anderson each had two hits and three RBI.

Craig Zaikov (2-0) picked up the win for Virginia. Castlewood native Denny Wagner (5-2) took the loss, giving up 11 runs, in 42/3 innings.

In other sports in the region:

Radford University has signed two more women's basketball recruits, guards Kim Hairston of Bassett and LaMonique Collins of South Easton, Mass.

Hairston averaged 22.8 points and 6.2 assists last year at Bassett High School, winning her third straight Piedmont District player of the year award in the process.

Collins averaged 15.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4.4 steals for Brooks School.

Radford, which loses five seniors off this season's NCAA Tournament team, already had signed four recruits, including 6-foot-2 Kim Cruise of Pulaski County High School.

Washington and Lee sophomore Tommy Dudley was named golfer of the year in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Wednesday in voting by the league's coaches.

W&L's Bill Raleigh was voted the conference's top coach. Raleigh led the Generals to their second straight ODAC title in his first season as head coach.

Other members of the All-ODAC golf team: Mike Ramsden, Lynchburg; Kevin Sagen, Guilford; Jeff Preston, Lynchburg; Berk Jolly, Hampden-Sydney; David Eggerton, Hampden-Sydney; Charley Meeks, Bridgewater.

Davidson scored four of the game's final six goals to down visiting Virginia Tech 13-11 in a women's college lacrosse game. The loss spoiled a huge effort by Tech's Amy Mantooth, who scored eight goals.

The Ferrum women's basketball team was awarded the Sears Collegiate Champions trophy at the Panthers' spring sports banquet. The Panthers won their first Dixie Conference championship and qualified for their first NCAA Division III tournament this season.

Senior Lisa Pendleton of Ferrum (softball) and Chad Maddux of Rustburg (baseball) were recipients of the President's Cup, given to the student-athlete who shows excellence in academics and athletics.
