PAINTER DIES IN FALL FROM SCAFFOLD

A Roanoke man, who planned to pay off the security deposit by painting the home he'd just rented, died after he fell from scaffolding Wednesday.

George Aldridge planned to move into the house at 910 Patterson Ave., according to Roanoke Sgt. K.P. Viar. About 1:15 p.m., the scaffolding Aldridge was standing on gave way and he landed on the open door of his parked truck.

Viar said Aldridge died on the way to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Aldridge, who had been living with his family in a cramped apartment on Rorer Ave., was excited to move in to the 4-bedroom house, said landlord Frank Roupas.

Roupas said they met at Kmart on Tuesday evening to buy 12 gallons of white paint.

"I told him I'd get him a ladder," Roupas said, "but he said, 'No, my scaffolding's better. It's much safer.'''
