EX-UVA STAR IS HEADED TO CANADA

Former Virginia star Shawn Moore, who played three games at quarterback in four seasons with the NFL's Denver Broncos, has signed a two-year contract with the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Rough Riders.

``I was about to say the heck with playing,'' said Moore, who completed 17 of 34 attempts for 232 yards with three interceptions in his three 1992 appearances. ``It was always: You wait here and your time will come.''

Moore, 27, is expected to battle Danny Barrett for the starting job. The one-time Martinsville High School standout joined Denver as an 11th-round draft pick in 1991 after setting 29 school passing records in three seasons at Virginia.

``He wants to play, prove himself and then command Doug Flutie-type [contract] numbers,'' said his agent, Brad Blank. ``Shawn feels maybe if he had chosen the CFL in the first place, he'd be one of the league's marquee players right now.''

The Rough Riders also own the CFL negotiation rights to Maurice DeShazo, the former Virginia Tech standout who wasn't picked in last weekend's NFL draft.
