TWELVE O'CLOCK FIRE TAKES 35 ACRES

A fire that may have started with a match or cigarette burned almost 35 acres on Twelve O'Clock Knob on Wednesday.

Six Roanoke County fire crews fought the fire, which began on the side of a road about three-quarters of the way up the mountain, Capt. Randy Smith said. It took more than four hours to contain the blaze, which started at about 4:30 p.m.

Smith said high humidity and light winds helped crews gain control, although they still had to battle the dry, downed brush from previous ice storms. He said no houses were in danger.
