Free anxiety test

Roanoke Memorial Psychiatric Services and the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley will offer free screenings for anxiety disorders during National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day on May 3.

The screenings will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital's Rehabilitation Center Auditorium, 2017 Jefferson St.

Anxiety disorders are characterized by fear and anxiety that appear for no apparent reason and inexplicably reach overwhelming levels.

New support group

The Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley is forming ``Coping With Schizophrenia,'' a support group for persons with schizophrenia.

The group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. at the Mental Health Association's office in the Jefferson Center, 541 Luck Ave., Suite 314, Roanoke.

Meetings are facilitated by mental health professionals and are free and open to the public.

Approximately 2 million Americans suffer from the illness, typically characterized by thought disturbances, mood changes, problems with language and communication, and withdrawn behavior.

Kendig Award

The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge is seeking nominations for the 10th annual Perry F. Kendig Award for Outstanding Support of the Arts.

Named after a former president of Roanoke College, the award recognizes businessmen or other individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and culture in the Roanoke region.

To nominate an individual or business, contact The Arts Council at 342-5790 to request a nomination form before May 1. The award ceremony will be held in August.

Free trees

Ten free Colorado blue spruce trees will be given to each person who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during April. The free trees are part of the non-profit foundation's Trees for America campaign.

The spruces have a silver blue-green color and a compact conical shape. They can be used as individual ornamentals, a windbreak, a privacy screen or as living Christmas trees.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting in April or May, with enclosed planting instructions. The six- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

To become a member of the foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to 10 Free Blue Spruces, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410 by April 30.

VWCC open house

Virginia Western Community College will hold a campus-wide open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Representatives from each department will be on campus to answer questions and provide information about academic programs, the admissions procedure, financial aid, career opportunities, transfer options and training programs.

A $300 scholarship provided by the Tech Prep program will be awarded through a drawing, as will other prizes. Sign-up is in the bookstore. Participants do not have to be present to win.

Tours of the arboretum will be available at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and the greenhouse will be open throughout the day. There will be continuous tours of the Brown Library, the Learning Center, the new Humanities Building and its Community Art Collection.

Averett revisited

Averett College alumni will have a chance to relive their college days at the institution's first ``Alumni College'' May 18-21.

The weekend's theme, ``Half A Century of Change: World War II To the Present,'' will be explored in a series of lectures by Averett professors.

The $149 cost includes presentations, meals, entertainment and lodging. For those not staying on campus, the cost is $125.

Musical performance

The Trio Fedele will bring its around-the-world tour to Roanoke College's Olin Theater on Saturday at 8 p.m.

The flute, cello and piano trio will play Haydn's Trio in D Major, Copland's Duo For Flute and Piano, Borne's Fantasia Brilliante on Themes From Carmen and ``The Jet Whistle'' for flute and cello.

Vox Balinae, ``Voice of the Whale,'' by Crumb, will be performed with special lighting and amplification effects and costuming. The piece is based on the song of the humpback whale.

Tickets are $11 for adults, $7 for students, and are available at the box office (375-2333, weekdays, 2-5 p.m.).

Book signings

Donald Secreast, author of ``White Trash Red Velvet,'' will sign copies of his book Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at Virginia Tech's University Volume Two Bookstore, Blacksburg.

Donlan Piedmont, author of ``Peanut Soup and Spoonbread,'' will sign copies of his book Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m at the Hotel Roanoke Gift Shop.

The book is a history of Hotel Roanoke.

Mary Campagna-Hamlin, author of ``Gainsboro: The Destruction of A Historic Community,'' will sign copies of her book Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Books Strings & Things' Market Square store in Roanoke.

Books-A-Million at Crossroads Mall on Hershberger Road, Roanoke, will host a book signing for Campagna-Hamlin on May 20 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Campagna-Hamlin's book details the effects of urban renewal on the Gainsboro neighborhood and is available at area bookstores.
