RELIGION BRIEFS

LOTTIE DIOMEDI, a former head of security at Patrick Henry High School, is the new shelter manager for Roanoke Area Ministries, an ecumenical service agency that operates a day shelter for the homeless at 820 Campbell Ave. S.W. Diomedi has been a volunteer with RAM for 15 years.

"SEEK HIS FACE" will be the theme of a National Day of Prayer service on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. This second annual observance will be at the base of the star on Mill Mountain and is sponsored by the Roanoke Valley unit of the National Association of Evangelicals. The Rev. John Ault and the Rev. Larry Eenigenburg will lead the observance.

After the rally, which is part of a national movement, small prayer groups will be formed to address special concerns.

ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH in Fincastle has begun the observance of its 225th anniversary with an evening service based on the one used in Episcopal churches in Virginia in 1790. Other events will be scheduled throughout the year. During the 18th century, the group used what is now the Presbyterian church. It disbanded for a time after the American Revolution but was reactivated 175 years ago and now uses one of Fincastle's historic church buildings. The major celebration will take place Labor Day weekend.

AT HIGH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH, 2302 Florida Ave. N.W. a special musical program is planned Sunday at 7 p.m. under the sponsorship of the January Birth Month Club. Guest performers will be the Rev. J. Eugene Young, pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church, and the Rev. Dwight O. Steele, pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church.

THE REV. NOLAN TEAGUE will retire from the pastorate of Daleville Baptist Church on May 31. Teague has served the Botetourt congregation for more than a decade, part of it as a bi-vocational pastor.

THE REV. STEVE DYE, who has been part-time pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church for the past eight years, has been elevated to full-time status.

EVANGELIST JOYCE A. HARPER, the Chicago founder and director of World Works Ministries, will preach for revival services May 4 -7 at Saved by Grace Holiness Church, 1201 Gilmer Ave. N.W.

Woman's Day will be observed on May 7.

"RE-MEMBERING CHURCH," a program to bring inactive Roman Catholics into full fellowship in a parish, has begun at St. Andrew's Church, 631 N. Jefferson St. Sessions are on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and are designed to update inactive Catholics on changes adopted in recent years. Call 344-9814 for more information.

AT WILLIAMS MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 2105 Carroll Ave. N.W., a gospel team from the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf will perform May 9 at 7 p.m.

The team promotes the ministry of a Jamaican school that is teaching 160 deaf people. The center dates from 1958, and the gospel team was started in 1982. Since 1991, the teams have traveled throughout the United States informing church and civic groups about the school and raising funds for its work.

THE REV. GARY A. KINGERY has become pastor of Red Hill Baptist Church in the Clearbrook section of Roanoke County. He succeeds the Rev. William Dixon who retired several months ago.

Kingery has served several Roanoke Valley congregations, most recently the Roanoke Avenue Baptist Church.

A CONTEMPORARY EUCHARIST, using renewal-style music performed by members of several parishes, is scheduled May 6 at 7 p.m. at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, 2339 Grandin Road S.W. Dress is informal for the Communion service, which is open to any baptized Christian.

MORNING STAR BAPTIST CHURCH, 1513 Rorer Ave. S. W., will be the site of a concert Saturday at 6 p.m. Guest performers will be the Bluefield (W.Va.) Mass Community Choir. The Dorcas Missionary Circle is the sponsor.

OUR LADY OF NAZARETH CATHOLIC members have cleared a $604,000 debt on their property at 2505 Electric Road S.W.

The Rev, Kenneth G. Stoft, pastor, said the church, during the past year, also has implemented a full Christian education program for all ages based on "conversion, community and discipleship." Several physical improvements, including a new organ and sound system, have been made to the building to enhance worship.

THE BOOK OF COLOSSIANS will be the subject of a noon-1 p.m. Bible study each Wednesday, beginning May 3 at Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, 2138 McVitty Road S.W. The Rev. Ed Woodard, pastor, will teach. Call 774-0595 for more information.

CAVE SPRING BAPTIST CHURCH, 4879 Brambleton Ave. S.W. will join other Southern Baptist congregations in a Here's Hope revival meeting starting Saturday with a banquet at 6 p.m.

On Sunday at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and each evening through Wednesday, the Rev. Dennis Wood will be the evangelist. Guest song leaders are Mitch Miles and Dean Bushnell..

THE REV. TOM FOLEY has left the Riverland Road Baptist pastorate. He has enrolled in the University of Virginia to study for a doctorate.

A MORMON OPEN HOUSE is planned Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Roanoke Stake Center, 6311 Wayburn Drive in Salem.

The open house will include a video presentation on the life and beliefs of Latter-day Saints by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Council of the 12 Apostles.
