"Craig County does hereby express its utmost and most sincere appreciation, gratitude and acknowledgements for the assistance, support, contributions and sacifices" by the firefighters and others who fought the destructive blazes, the resolution read.
Three fires ignited on April 8 in separate areas of the Jefferson National Forest and burned about 5,000 acres and threatened private residences and businesses.
The supervisors' resolution, adopted on April 18, noted that U.S. and Virginia forest personnel, members of the Virginia National Guard, other governmental agencies and volunteers in the county fought the fires, limiting the damage to woodlands. No residences or business places were damaged.
The supervisors' resolution said that through the untiring efforts of these agencies and individuals greater damage from the three fires was prevented.
