LAKE GASTON FIGHT NEARING AN END

The water war between Virginia Beach and North Carolina appears to be coming to an end after 121/2 years of court battles and millions of dollars in legal fees.

North Carolina and Virginia Beach officials announced Wednesday that they had reached a settlement over the proposed 76-mile water pipeline from Lake Gaston on the Virginia-North Carolina border to thirsty southeastern Virginia. It would carry up to 60 million gallons of water daily.

Virginia Beach City Council is to hold a special meeting today and plans to approve the agreement. North Carolina officials said they will sign the agreement today.

The settlement also must be approved by the end of June by the legislatures of both states, Chesapeake City Council and Congress.
