THE WEEK'S BEST IN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

BASEBALL

JON ROGERS, Bath County

Rogers beat Glenvar 9-3 and then shut out Parry McCluer 14-0 to push his record to 5-0 with a 1.13 earned run average. He also is hitting .386.

DOUG KENNEY, Cave Spring

Kenney had a homer, double and two singles in four trips, scored four runs and knocked in two as Cave Spring battered E.C. Glass 14-9. Kenney's homer was part of a barrage that has seen the Knights sock at least one home run in 10 of 12 games on the way to a 10-2 record before Friday.

GREG STUBBLEFIELD, Rockbridge Co.

Stubblefield collected three hits in four trips, scored five runs and knocked in four while pitching a two-hitter and striking out eight in a 21-0 victory over Northside that was shortened to five innings.

CHAD SHAFFNER, Grayson County

Shaffner went 8-for-11 with two doubles, a triple, a homer, six RBI and three stolen bases as the Wildcats won games over Rocky Gap (4-1), Galax (10-0) and Group AA Carroll County (7-6). He's now had 31 hits in 49 trips (.633).

JOSH STEPHENS, Giles

Stephens fired a one-hitter and struck out nine in a 2-1 victory over Floyd County. He also singled in the tying run and scored the winning run.

JIM CUTLER, Liberty

Cutler, the state's winningest high school baseball coach, collected his 400th victory as the Minutemen beat Amherst County 14-5. Cutler is 400-192.

\ SOFTBALL

KATIE DENNEHY, Roanoke Catholic

It might be slow-pitch, but Dennehy has fast-pitch statistics. The Celtic pitcher allowed only three hits in a 10-0 victory over Stuart Hall. In eight games and 53 innings, her earned run average is 1.15.

TAMASA ADAMS, TRACY DOUPNIK,

William Byrd

In three games, Adams was 6-for-13 with 11 RBI as the Terriers whacked Group AAA schools Cave Spring 12-6 and Heritage 20-0, and Blue Ridge District rival Salem 16-5. She also pitched seven innings, saving the Cave Spring game and winning the Heritage contest while giving up just two earned runs and striking out 13. Doupnik pitched 11 innings, getting victories against Cave Spring and Salem while allowing five earned runs and striking out 11 to push her record to 7-0. She also was 6-for-13 with five runs scored and five RBI.

LISA CARR, SELENA BYERS, Liberty

Carr went 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBI in a 16-1 victory over William Campbell. Byers was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI in a 7-4 victory over Brookville.

BETTE KAUFMAN, North Cross

Kaufman was 4-for-5 with two RBI as North Cross handed Lynchburg Christian its first loss of the season, 10-9 in eight innings.

KIM SUTPHIN, KIM MORAN,

Floyd County

Sutphin went 7-for-8 with two doubles, two triples and seven RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Christiansburg by scores of 25-1 and 11-6. Moran pitched a no-hitter and struck out eight in the first game, shortened to five innings.

BRIDGET EDWARDS, Carroll County

Edwards fired a no-hitter and stuck out nine in a 24-3 victory over Radford.

\ SOCCER

CHRIS HEWITT, Cave Spring

Hewitt scored four goals and had one assist as the Knights whipped Pulaski County 8-2, pushing their record to 7-0-1 in boys' soccer.

ANN STELZEL, CHRISTY HINMAN,

Roanoke Catholic

Stelzel, a freshman, had four goals and one assist while Hinman, a sophomore, reversed that with one goal and four assists plus two saves as a keeper in the Celtics' 8-1 victory over Magna Vista.

EMILY COOK, North Cross

Cook scored two goals and assisted in two others as the Raiders beat Stuart Hall 5-1. She's had seven goals and seven assists in 10 games.

\ TRACK

CHARLEE TAYLOR, Radford

Taylor turned in a school record time of 2:22.5 in the 800-meter dash in a meet this past week against Blacksburg, breaking a mark of 2:22.8 by Debbie Mackler that had stood since 1981.

JOHNNY BURRELL, MELISSA BAKER,

James River

Burrell, a junior, won the shot put (48 feet, 51/2 inches) and the discus (138-8) in the Augusta County Invitational track. Both performances qualify him for the Group A state meet next month at Charlottesville and would have been good enough to place last year. Baker, a sophomore, won the 100-meter dash (12.6 seconds to tie a school record) and the 300-meter hurdles (50.1) while placing second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.4). All her marks were personal bests and she qualifies for the state in the 100.

\ MISCELLANEOUS

FOSTER RIDPATH, BUD REDDEN,

Radford

It was a double no-hit day for two Radford pitchers. While Foster Ridpath chucked one for the varsity in an 19-0 victory at Auburn, Bud Redden did the same at home against Auburn in an 11-0 junior-varsity game. Ridpath struck out nine, walked two and hit one in the five-inning game. Redden was just a little better. He struck out 11 and walked one in five innings as he issued a free pass with two outs in the final inning to lose a perfect game.
