ESCAPEE, 17, RECAPTURED IN VINTON

A Vinton police officer captured a teen about 1 p.m. Friday who had escaped from the Coyner Springs Detention Center just two hours earlier in a stolen Roanoke city truck.

The 17-year-old boy was in the detention center on charges of robbery by violence, burglary with intent to rob and use of a firearm in a felony, according to Roanoke police.

He saw his chance to escape when Roanoke maintenance workers opened the yard's gate before bringing in mowing equipment. He fled through the gate and took a truck they had brought to the center.

The teen's description was sent to area law enforcement officials, and a Vinton officer spotted a boy matching the description walking on a Vinton street.

When the officer went to talk to him, the boy ran. After a brief chase on foot, the officer had the teen in custody.

The stolen truck, however, has not been found, according to Roanoke police.
