GLENVAR, LAYMAN ROLL

THE HIGHLANDERS avenge a loss to Parry McCluer earlier this season with a 16-0 romp.

Amy Layman got her revenge.

Glenvar's sophomore star softball pitcher came away from a 14-10 loss to Parry McCluer earlier this season with an injured ankle and the pain of her first defeat of the year. On Friday, Layman put the hurt on the Fighting Blues.

In a game between two of three teams tied for the Pioneer District lead, Layman allowed only one hit and struck out nine batters as Glenvar romped 16-0 in a game shortened to five innings.

Layman also led Glenvar's offensive barrage with a single and double, three stolen bases, two RBI and three runs scored. The Highlanders had 10 hits, stole 14 bases, and were helped by seven Parry McCluer errors.

Glenvar (7-5 overall, 4-1 Pioneer) can all but end the district race with a win over the other contender, James River, on Tuesday. Glenvar has beaten the Knights twice, once in a non-conference game.

Layman and the HIghlanders dominated Parry McCluer (6-6, 3-2). Only two Fighting Blues reached base.

``We just didn't play together that first game,'' said Layman, who sprained her ankle before the first meeting. ``This was a very good game. I really didn't think it would be this easy.''

Layman earned All-Timesland honors last season by pitching Glenvar to the Group A state semifinals, where it lost to James River.

``In the beginning of the year, I felt I was where I was at last year,'' Layman said. ``I've progressed since then. I'm more confident.''

Glenvar continued to create havoc with its baserunning. The Highlanders have stolen 47 bases.

``Until they throw us out, we run,'' Glenvar coach Spike Harrison said.

``This year, we only have two players with below average speed. So we practice sliding, though the girls don't like it. We practice sliding and popping up, ready to go to the next base. It's a way to dishearten the other team.

``The really good teams like [Group AA] William Byrd are ready for it. We got away with some of it against James River.''

Marilea Hale also provided offensive punch with a triple, double, single and three RBI.

``This is the best we've played this year and that's the best Marilea has ever hit,'' Harrison said.

Parry McCluer's lone hit was Devon Fitzgerald's two-out single in the first inning.
