GIRL SCOUT CAMPING EVENT IS GOLD AWARD PROJECT

Rozetta Reed, a senior Girl Scout with Blacksburg's Troop 209, hopes to put Riverside Park to good use Sunday, 3-6 p.m., weather permitting. As part of her efforts to complete requirements for her Girl Scout Gold Award, Reed, a senior at Radford High School, will conduct a camping skills event for Daisies, Brownies and junior Girl Scouts at the former Black playground on the New River, just east of Bisset Park.

Reed is the only senior Girl Scout in Radford. The Gold Award is the highest a senior Girl Scout can get.

If weather turns bad, Reed will use Shelter 1 in Bisset Park.

At a City Council meeting earlier this month, Reed outlined plans to resurrect the park and create a permanent camping area there. She asked council to support the plans for a closed shelter, tenting area and lavatories for use by scouting and other groups. She's also contacted Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Abingdon) for information on financing the project.

Recreation Department Supervisor Kenny Goodyear said Reed's concept fits in with the long-range plans for the city's parks.

The city, which leases the property from Norfolk Southern, plans to ask the railroad if it would consider donating the tract to the city.
