NEWCOMERS KEY SALEM WIN

Sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders for one's productivity.

Newcomers Randy Snyder and Colin Dixon provided the impetus Friday as the Salem Avalanche defeated Frederick 11-3 in Carolina League baseball at Municipal Field.

Snyder and Dixon, reassigned to Salem from Class AA New Haven (Conn.), cracked two-run homers as the Avalanche won the opener of a seven-game homestand. Snyder, a catcher, has five hits in two games since joining the team, and Dixon, a first baseman, drove in four runs in his Salem debut.

Dixon's homer was the big hit in a three-run third inning and Snyder capped the festivities with a long poke over the left-field wall in the eighth.

``It's nice to be out there playing,'' Snyder said. He had been sitting on the bench in New Haven and was sent to Salem to see more action. He had three hits in his debut Thursday at Durham and added two more Friday against the Keys.

Snyder said he's ``still a little bit anxious'' at the plate, but said he's ``seen the ball real well later in the game.'' His hits Friday came in the sixth and eighth innings, and his homer went well beyond the wall.

``It felt like that one would have been out anywhere,'' Snyder said.

The offensive output of Snyder and Dixon, combined with 13 walks issued by three Frederick pitchers, helped the Avalanche win for only the third time in 14 games. Salem sent 11 men to the plate in the sixth inning and scored five runs, making the most of four hits and five walks.

Designated hitter Chris Sexton drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, John Giudice singled home a run, Forry Wells walked to produce another run, Dixon walked for another run and Mark Wells produced a run with an infield hit.

Salem starter Doug Walls (1-1) was the beneficiary of the offensive surge. He went five innings, struck out eight and surrendered only one earned run. Reliever Scott Larock struck out four in three innings.

Walls worked out of trouble in the third inning by striking out Frederick third baseman Tommy Davis to end the inning. A throwing error by Walls contributed to Frederick's first run in the third inning, and the Keys used two hits and a walk to score again in the fifth.

Second baseman Jesse Garcia, left fielder Ty Quillin and Davis had three hits each for Frederick.

Salem got two hits each from Giudice and Mark Wells. Sexton reached base four times on a hit and three walks.

EXTRA BASES: Salem released outfielder Jim Lezeau and relief pitchers Barry Goldman and Jeff Locklear. ... Infielder Steven Bernhardt was activated from the disabled list. ... Catcher Yohel Pozo has been reassigned to Asheville, N.C., of the South Atlantic League. ... In an oddity, Salem sent six men to the plate in the seventh inning without scoring. ... Jamey Wright (1-3) will pitch for the Avalanche tonight against lefty Rachaad Stewart (1-1).
