DALKON TRUST TO PAY AGAIN

The Dalkon Shield Claimants Trust will send many women injured by the birth control device a second payment that could be 75 percent as large as the first, the chairman of the trust says.

Georgene M. Vairo announced the payment plans Thursday during a hearing before U.S. District Judge Robert R. Merhige Jr. and Senior U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Blackwell N. Shelly.

The trust started in December 1989 with $2.3 billion and had paid $1.35 billion to resolve 170,537 claims as of last Friday. The trust, swelled by investment income, still has $1.4 billion and only 19,000 claims to resolve.
