A Myrtle Beach tidal wave ruined the soccer debut by the Roanoke RiverDawgs on Saturday.
The Myrtle Beach Boyz scored five unanswered goals after the RiverDawgs' initial strike and rolled to a 5-2 win in a United Systems of Independent Soccer League game in front of 863 people in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Boyz (2-3) put the muzzle on the RiverDawgs after Roanoke scored an early goal to take a 1-0 lead. Roanoke's first goal was scored on an indirect kick by Eric McClellan just 7:13 into the game.
But Myrtle Beach's John Garvey scored at the 10-minute mark, and again 1:10 later, to give the Boyz the lead for good.
Gabe Garcia added another goal at the 21:45 mark that gave Myrtle Beach a 3-1 lead. The Boyz led 4-1 at halftime when Carlos Garcia, Gabe's brother, scored late in the first half.
Erwin Affelman chipped in another goal for the Boyz one minute into the second half to finish the scoring for Myrtle Beach, which outshot Roanoke 25-16. Goalkeeper Scott Schweitzer made seven saves for the Boyz.
Roanoke (0-1) got another goal from McClellan late in the game to end the scoring for the RiverDawgs. Former Roanoke College goalkeeper Aaron Ewert made eight saves.
