GRAND SLAM!

It is called a Grand Slam when a hunter kills all four strains of wild turkeys in North America.

Few sportsmen accomplish the feat in a lifetime, much less a single season, but that's what J. Carson Quarles of Roanoke did this spring. Here's how his marathon hunt went:

OSCEOLA TURKEY: March 10, Florida, 17 pounds.

EASTERN SUBSPECIES: March 23, Alabama, 19 pounds.

RIO GRANDE TURKEY: April 8, Texas, 20 pounds.

MERRIAM TURKEY: April 15, New Mexico, 17 pounds.

Quarles retired Dec. 31 as president of the Southwestern region of Central Fidelity National Bank. The Florida and Alabama trips were retirement gifts from the bank. His brother, Carey, gave him the trip to New Mexico.
