NEW RU PRESIDENT TO ADDRESS GRADUATES

Douglas Covington, Radford University's incoming president, will be the main speaker at graduation exercises starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Board of Visitors appointed Covington in January. He takes office June 1.

The processional for the university's 82nd commencement program will start at 9:30 a.m. on Moffett Quad. Acting President Charles Owens, Board of Visitors Rector Bernard Wampler and senior class President Kathryn Anne Randall will offer remarks before Covington speaks.

Randall will present a senior class gift of $10,000, the largest single-year class gift to the university since 1986. The money is designated for materials and equipment for McConnell Library.

More than 1,200 students will receive degrees, including 472 in the College of Arts and Sciences, 174 in business and economics, 111 in the Waldron College of Nursing and Health Services, 159 in education and human development, 78 in visual and performing arts, 196 in the graduate college, and 16 in adult education.

After the joint 10 a.m. ceremony, each college will hold a separate ceremony at 11:30 a.m.

The Graduate College Hooding Ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. in Preston Auditorium. Graduate students will then participate in the 10 a.m. ceremony and in their respective college ceremonies.
