Harman, a Democrat, has served as clerk since 1984.
Humphrey said her experience in the legal field qualifies her for the position, which pays just over $60,000 a year. She said she also views the office as "an opportunity to serve the people of Radford."
"It fascinates me," she said of her work in the legal profession.
The clerk's duties primarily involve managing and archiving court system paperwork and other legal records, including real estate transactions. The office also issues marriage licenses.
A Radford native, Humphrey also worked for six years as a secretary at Belle Heth Elementary. She's a Radford High graduate. She is on the board of directors of the Radford Pipe Shop Employees Federal Credit Union and recently was appointed to its executive committee. She's married to Larry Humphrey and has two children, Lisa Cross and Gary Cross.
Former city official and businessman R. Coleman Brittle and city police officer Todd Jones also have announced plans to seek the Republican nomination to succeed Harman.
The Radford Republican Committee meets tonight to set the mass meeting date to pick the party's clerk candidate.
Harman's chief deputy clerk, Zelda S. Vaughn, who came in second to Harman when he was first elected, is expected to announce for the Democratic Party nomination soon. Vaughn has worked in the clerk's office for 20 years. Harman has pledged to support her candidacy.
