FOG BLAMED IN PILOT'S DEATH

A pilot who died when his two-seater plane crashed into woods near the Louisa County Airport has been identified as Allan J. Gottdenker, 59, of Hackensack, N.J., police said.

Gottdenker was alone in the plane. He was flying Sunday from Leesburg to pick up a passenger at the Louisa airport and had planned to leave immediately for the New York area, said Mary Evans, a state police spokeswoman.

The airport was on ``instrument flight rule'' conditions, which means a pilot would have to rely on instruments to land rather than flying by visual reference, said a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

Evans said foggy conditions could have been a factor in the crash. Gottdenker was not qualified to fly by instruments, she said.

No one else was injured in the crash, which will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
