The Roanoke County school's PTA has received the Advocates for Children Award, an honor created by the national PTA to recognize one unit per state each year.
The school's PTA will represent Virginia at the national PTA convention in Orlando, Fla., this summer.
The Oak Grove's advocacy program included a campaign to reduce the violence that children are exposed to in video games and computer software.
The Oak Grove PTA persuaded the Virginia PTA convention to approve a resolution calling for a reduction in computer violence. The resolution may be considered at the national PTA level next year.
Debra Landgraf, president of the Oak Grove PTA, believes the award is a tribute to the parents, grandparents, teachers, staff, students and community members who are involved in the school.
"Yearly, the school staff and PTA work cooperatively to encourage this high level of involvement in our children's educational process and advocating for all children," Landgraf said.
Principal Margaret Moles said the Oak Grove parents are truly partners with the school in the educational process.
