IN SERVICE

SECOND LT. DOUGLAS W. POFF, son of H. Ray and Ruby G. Poff of Roanoke, has earned the Army Commendation Medal, which is awarded to soldiers who demonstrate outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the performance of their duties. Poff is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School and the College of William and Mary.

BRETT A. PHILLIPS, son of Lloyd E. and Karen J. Phillips of Roanoke, has been commissioned a second lieutenant after graduating from training school at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. He is a 1981 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT ROBERT G. GILES, son of Robert G. and Mary P. Giles of Roanoke, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1988 graduate of Roanoke Valley Christian School and a 1994 graduate of Radford University.

PVT. FIRST CLASS WILLIAM M. PANNELL, son of Claudia M. Pannell of Roanoke, has been named an honor graduate of the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry, Virginia Army National Guard.

He completed advanced individual training and finished first in the eight-week food service specialist course at Fort Lee.

SGT. DARIN L. BLACK of Buchanan has earned the Army Achievement Medal from the Virginia Army National Guard for exceptionally meritorious achievement.

STEVE M. HAUPT, son of James M. and Wanda F. Haupt of Vinton, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1992 graduate of William Byrd High School.
