FIRST CANDIDATE FILES FOR CRAIG SCHOOL BOARD

A Barbour's Creek man has become the first person to file petitions to have his name appear on the ballot in November's election for the Craig County School Board.

Patrick A. Myers, an employee of Appalachian Power Co., is seeking one of two at-large seats on the five-member board. He has a daughter who attends Craig County High School.

To date, three incumbents have announced their intentions to seek election to the board and are circulating petitions to qualify for the ballot. James Cady is seeking election to the Alleghany District seat; Karen H. Southworth is running for an at-large seat; and Thomas A. Zimmerman is running for the New Castle District seat.

Brenda Allen, a Sinking Creek resident, also is circulating petitions for an at-large seat. Bonnie Hutchison, who now represents the Simmonsville District, is expected to begin circulating petitions as well.

Helen Abbott Looney, a current at-large member, has said she will not seek election.

The deadline for filing petitions is June 13 for the Nov. 7 election, which marks Craig County's transition from an appointed board.
