STING OPERATION NABS PROSTITUTES, CUSTOMERS

In a two-prong sting operation that targeted prostitutes and their customers, Roanoke vice detectives arrested nine women and 16 men last week.

"The operation is done to curtail prostitution but it also makes the customer responsible for contributing to the prostitution problem," said vice Lt. Ron Carlisle.

The operation took place April 26-28 and centered on the 600 to 900 blocks of Salem Avenue Southwest - including Rorer and Norfolk avenues - and Campbell Avenue Southeast, from the viaduct to Eighth Street Southeast - including Church and Tazewell avenues.

Police said they periodically receive complaints from business owners about prostitution in the areas. The operation was part of the department's ongoing efforts against prostitution, police said.

Nine women were arrested after undercover detectives posed as customers. A female undercover officer then was used and 16 male customers were arrested. The customers offered the detective money or drugs for sexual favors, police said. Three of the men also were charged with drug offenses and two of the men also were charged with possession of concealed firearms.

Under state law, if the suspects are convicted they will undergo an HIV test.
