INELIGIBLE PLAYER COSTS CAVE SPRING

The Roanoke Valley District's leading baseball team, Cave Spring, is forfeiting six games because one of its players was academically ineligible.

Four of the losses are within the district to Franklin County, William Fleming twice and Patrick Henry. That knocks the Knights out of first and leaves them with a 6-7 overall mark and 4-5 RVD record. The two non-league forfeits are to William Byrd and Heritage.

Cave Spring principal Martha Cobble said it was brought to her attention on Tuesday that the student, whom she declined to name, had not passed five subjects in the first semester as required by the Virginia High School League.

``It's an oversight,'' said Cobble, who filed a report to the VHSL and RVD president. ``I've been on appeals committee meetings where it has happened to other schools. All parties [at any school] have to share the responsibility in making sure this doesn't happen.''

Franklin County and Pulaski County now take command at the top of the district standings.
